Truthout.org hacked? Or not?

by

Yesterday, people around the internets received an email claiming to be from Truthout.org. The email said their site had been hacked and their “content over the past ten days was deleted”.

Dear Readers,

Late last night, Truthout.org was attacked and our content over the past ten days was deleted. We’re working to capture the cache versions of those stories that are no longer available and republish them on our website.

You may find that some links will take you to “Page Not Found.” Right now we’re working to restore the vandalized stories.

We will update you as soon as we have more information, and hope to be back in full force very soon.

Thank you for your patience and your support!

Sincerely,
The Truthout Team

Well, this is, of course, alarming and reminiscent of what happened to our friends at Blue Wave News not so long ago. But here’s the weird thing: if you go to Truthout’s website, there’s not a single mention of this anywhere on their site. A comprehensive Google search turns up only a single mention of this on Democratic Underground and that’s simply a reposting of the email.

So, was Truthout.org actually attacked and hacked? If so, who did the dirty deed and why is Truthout being silent about it on their website? It appears to be a mystery. I’ll update if I learn more.

UPDATE: Looks like it’s the real thing. From the Truthout Facebook page:

Truthout is facing technical difficulties after an attack by Internet vandals which destroyed the last ten days of our content late last night. We’ll update you when we’re back online. Thank you for your support!

I’m just sayin’…
