A few things to remember about a day to never forget: the day the birthplace of the labor movement became right to work

Never, ever forget

Eclectagraphic by Anne C. Savage, special to Eclectablog

A year ago today, Michigan, the birthplace of the modern labor movement, became the country’s 24th right to work state. Though it has failed to kill the labor movement in the way its corporatist proponents had hoped it would, neither has it done anything that could even remotely be considered good for job growth in our state. In fact, a continuous drop in Michigan’s unemployment rate came to an abrupt end several months later and it began to rise again. For the past three months, it’s been stalled at 9%, the third worst in the country.…

UPDATED x3 – Tentgate: What really happened?

Curiouser and curiouser...

NOTE: Matthew Allen, the 18-year old college student who first brought the selective editing of the original Crowder video to my attention, provided valuable assistance in the preparation of this post. He spent an enormous amount of time pouring over video of the event and I am grateful for his persistence and valuable contribution to this story. The destruction of the two Americans for Prosperity tents on the grounds of the Michigan State Capitol building during Tuesday's anti-Right to Work for Less rally has stirred interest nationally. Those on the right portray it as a violent upheaval of "union thugs" and "union goons" who acted as predicted: with violence and mayhem and racism and vandalism. Those on the left have framed it as anti-union conservative groups getting their just desserts for their harmful attacks on working men and women. My take after the jump.

Tea partiers outnumbered 10-to-1 by labor ralliers once again

It’s beginning to become a bit of trend here in Michigan: tea partiers have a rally that is dwarfed by a liberal/Democratic/labor rally. This week was no exception.

Yesterday, the biggest protest rally yet by union members on the steps of the State Capitol building drew an estimated 4,500 attendees.

Thousands rally at Capitol against Michigan budget, cuts to education, pension taxes

Thousands of protesters angry at Gov. Rick Snyder’s proposed budget converged on the state Capitol lawn Wednesday to send a message to legislators.

The rally, estimated to be the biggest one of the year, drew approximately 4,500 people, many of them union members.

Hundreds of Lansing high school students protest at Michigan Capitol building

This is positively brilliant and happened just this morning:

Hundreds of protesting high school students face disciplinary action

Lansing School District officials have confirmed that more 300 students face possible suspension for skipping school today to protest education cuts at the Capitol.

“According to the Lansing schools code of conduct, participation in (the protest) is a non-excused absence, which does warrant some level of disciplinary action,” said Annie Rzepecki, spokeswoman for the Lansing School District. “That has yet to be determined.

Rzepecki said the disciplinary action could include suspension.

This morning, students from Eastern, Everett and Sexton high schools descended on the Capitol, mainly to protest cuts to K-12 education proposed by Gov.

Liveblogging of the protest rally at the Michigan Capitol in Lansing

Liveblogging from the Michigan Capitol protest rally in Lansing today…

1:15pm – This guy is a teabagger. I overheard him tell the guy next to him, “Well, I’m going to try to get some recognition for this sign and get it plastered all over the fucking place.” He stopped to pose for me no fewer than three times and he posed for anyone with a camera.

Notice that his buddy in the white shirt next to him has the Swastika/Snyderkamph image literally taped to his shirt. That shirt is an SEIU shirt. Shades of Mark Williams???

At least 3,000 people here and growing.…
