“Why don’t you just leave?” — The case for staying in the fight for Michigan

by

Every time the Republicans who run Michigan do some new incredibly regressive thing, I hear it from several people:

“WHY DON’T YOU JUST LEAVE?”

When Republicans imposed the most draconian, anti-democratic law on our state — our infamous “Emergency Manager” Law — I heard it.

When Republicans passed a huge tax cut for corporations and paid for it by raising taxes on over half of the people in our state, including a tax on seniors’ pensions, and by cutting funding for schools — I heard it.

When Republicans made the birthplace of the modern labor movement a right to work state — I heard it.

And my answer was always the same: Michigan is worth fighting for.

Whether it’s our incredible inland fresh water seas — the magnificent Great Lakes — or our lush and verdant forests…

Whether it’s breathtaking National Parks like the Sleeping Bear Dunes & the Pictured Rocks or our enviable state parks & campgrounds…

Whether it’s the lily white, conservative cities on the west side of the state or the majority black, liberal metro area on the east side of the state…

Whether it’s our exciting cities & urban areas or our rustic farmlands & quaint villages…

It doesn’t matter where in Michigan you go, you will find something worth fighting for. You will find people who will welcome you and who are proud to tell you about their part of the state. You will find artists and scientists and builders and workers of all shapes, sizes, and colors.

And despite the efforts of those who control our state legislature to sell off our fine state piecemeal to the highest corporate bidder, you will find people who are sticking it out and fighting hard to save our state. That’s what we do every day here at Eclectablog and we’re in it for the duration.

Four times a year, we come to you to ask you to be a part of that, to support our efforts financially so that we can keep fighting for Michigan and for our progressive values on the national stage, as well. We want you in the fight with us so we arm you with the information that you need to be effective in whatever action you take.

We have a different model at Eclectablog than most other blogs have: We pay our writers and we don’t run ads (except in the comment section which is unavoidable.) This model only works if YOU contribute.

There are three ways for you to support our efforts. First, you can use the handy PayPal form at the top of the right sidebar to make a one-time donation via Paypal in the amount of your choice.

Second, you can send a check (which avoids Paypal taking out a percentage of your donation) to Chris Savage, P.O. Box 32, Dexter, MI 48130. Please make the check payable to “Eclectablog”.

Finally, you can become a monthly sustainer by making a recurring donation each month by using this form:

If you aren’t able to make a donation of any kind (and we appreciate support at ALL levels), please continue to share our posts and podcasts throughout all of your social media platforms to ensure that the hard work of our most excellent staff is seen by as many folks as possible.

Thank you.
