ACTION: Michigan Democrats & progressive groups get ready for the Republican lame duck session

Now is not the time to rest

The Michigan legislature holds its lame duck session starting today and continuing through December 20th. The Republicans who control both houses of our legislature are signaling that they intend to get a LOT done in over the next four weeks. Further efforts to destroy our labor unions, an egregious, overreaching “reform” (aka privatization) of our public school system and further battles in their incessant War on Women all appear to be on the docket.

The Michigan Democratic Party along with the Michigan AFL-CIO are holding strategy/informational sessions this evening and tomorrow evening around the state and, if you have the time, it is imperative that you attend.

Friends and fellow Democrats,

Less than three weeks ago, voters delivered a strong rebuke to Lansing Republicans by defeating five incumbent Representatives. The people of Michigan rejected the Republican agenda of slashing taxes for corporate special interests, while hiking taxes for seniors and middle-class families and cutting funding for our kids’ schools.

Have Lansing Republicans learned their lesson? NO!

Instead, they are preparing to ram through a Tea Party platform during lame duck session, when those defeated Representatives will have zero accountability to the voters. Here are just a few of the items on the agenda:

  • Undermining workers’ rights
  • Instituting voucher-style “reform” of our public schools
  • Cutting taxes even further for corporate special interests

What can you do to fight this lame duck power grab? The Protect Working Families coalition is organizing events this week all across the state to mobilize for the lame duck session.
