Obama gives speech to Planned Parenthood that conservatives said he cancelled

“Planned Parenthood is not going anywhere”

President Obama delivered remarks to the national Planned Parenthood conference today. He had been scheduled to deliver them earlier in the week but, instead, delayed his speech to spend more time with the victims of the explosion in West, Texas. When it was announced that his original speech was cancelled, the anti-Choice group Susan B. Anthony List declared victory (as did others).

They were, of course, quite wrong.

This should be interesting

Next week, the state legislature reconvenes on Tuesday. When they get to work that morning, they will be greeted by thousands of outraged Michiganders who are there to let these lawmakers know that the Right to Work for Less legislation — or Right to Freeload as some are calling it — it an afront to the citizens of the birthplace of labor unions.

I wrote yesterday about the involvement in the rally as well as that of Planned Parenthood. Now, with other groups signing on, we learn that conservative groups have reserved the Capitol Building grounds in an effort to stop their rally.

Hard to believe we STILL have to fight the War on Women

the Republican War on Women in full swing, including an anti-women Republican Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan, Planned Parenthood is launching a Women are Watching battleground state bus tour to educate and mobilize voters in 11 states over 17 days.

The tour with their iconic “Big Pink Bus” lands in Canton, Michigan TOMORROW, Tuesday, August 21, 2012. It’s no surprise. Women are under attack more profoundly in our state than in most others. Republicans in our state legislature are on a course to roll back nearly every gain in women’s reproductive freedoms that we’ve made.

UPDATED: Planned Parenthood is NOT backing down – 2nd MAJOR rally of the week at the state Capitol TOMORROW (6/14/12)

We’re still watching and we still vote

As I wrote yesterday, Planned Parenthood of Michigan brought nearly 500 protestors to the state Capitol yesterday to protest a package of bills that will make Michigan the most anti-choice, forced-birth state in the country. Photos and video from the rally can be found HERE.

In the face of the noisy protest, a scheduled vote was postponed in the full House and is likely to be voted on tomorrow.

More anti-Choice/anti-abortion laws headed for Michigan

Government small enough to fit inside your uterus

On the heels of their wildly successful year of “small government” where they created no fewer than 323 new laws, Michigan Republicans turned their attention to making abortion services as difficult as possible for Michigan women to obtain.

Last year, the passed a bill making illegal abortions illegal(er).

From a Detroit News article this morning we learn about new bills trying to make getting an abortion as hard as they possibly can:

  • Making an abortion illegal after 22 weeks
  • Creating a new “Choose Life” fundraising license plate for anti-choice groups (with no similar license plate fundraiser for groups working to give women better access to abortion services)
  • Preventing any providers in a state-run health insurance exchange from offering coverage for elective abortions
  • Mandatory screening of all women requesting an abortion to ensure she isn’t being “forced or coerced to have the abortion against her will”
  • Mandatory requirement that any woman seeking an abortion be told she told she has an option to view an active ultrasound image and hear the fetus’ heartbeat before having the procedure

State Representative Jeff Irwin (whom I have adopted as my own Representative since Mark Ouimet decidedly does NOT represent my interests) had this to say:

They are trying to find every possible avenue to frustrate women and to frustrate providers that are in a position of dealing with this difficult choice and this difficult time in their lives.…

The GOP debate train wreck finds it’s way to Michigan. Help Planned Parenthood and others “welcome” them.

This Wednesday, the train wreck known as the GOP primary crashes its sorry way into Michigan when the skabillionth debate will be held at Oakland University. As you might imagine, there are a few folks that would like to “welcome” them to our fair state.

First, Planned Parenthood of Michigan (PPOM) will be there to meet the GOP contenders, every single one of which is anti-choice.

This Wednesday, November 9, 2011, a Republican Presidential Debate will be taking place at Oakland University. All of the GOP candidates are anti-choice, with many supporting a “personhood” amendment that would not only outlaw abortion but ban common forms of birth control, emergency contraception, and in vitro fertilization.…

Arbor Brewing Co. ignores anti-choice flak to host successful Planned Parenthood fundraiser

Last night Planned Parenthood of Mid and South Michigan held a beer-tasting fundraiser at Ann Arbor’s Arbor Brewing Company. I posted a few photos from the event HERE and there are many more below from my wife, Anne C. Savage.

I had a chance to talk with Rene Greff, co-owner with her husband Matt, of Arbor Brewing Co. and the Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti. This event was their 14th annual fundraiser for Planned Parenthood and, as you might imagine, they have faced stiff pushback from anti-choice protesters over the years and this year was no exception. Thankfully there were no protesters at the event but there was plenty of hostility directed at them prior to it.…

Planned Parenthood’s 14th Annual Ann Arbor Beer Tasting – TOMORROW! 10/5/2011

Lizz Winstead kicks off her WTF tour to support Planned Parenthood in Michigan – Delicious eye candy within!

Lizz Winstead kicked off her “Planned Parenthood, I Am Here For You!” tour (aka, the “WTF” (What’s the Fuss?) tour) in Pontiac, Michigan on Saturday and I was privileged to be there to cover it. Lizz Winstead is the co-creator of the Daily Show and co-founder of Air America radio. Actually, I’m pretty sure that’s her name — “Lizz Winstead Co-creator Of The Daily Show And Co-founder of Air America” — because that’s how she is always introduced.

After Saturday night, I think she should be renamed:

“Lizz Winstead, Heroic Supporter Of Planned Parenthood”

The purpose of the tour is to bring attention to Planned Parenthood and the efforts by those on the right who will stop at nothing to prevent them from helping women across the country.…
