ACTION: Michigan Democrats & progressive groups get ready for the Republican lame duck session

Now is not the time to rest

The Michigan legislature holds its lame duck session starting today and continuing through December 20th. The Republicans who control both houses of our legislature are signaling that they intend to get a LOT done in over the next four weeks. Further efforts to destroy our labor unions, an egregious, overreaching “reform” (aka privatization) of our public school system and further battles in their incessant War on Women all appear to be on the docket.

The Michigan Democratic Party along with the Michigan AFL-CIO are holding strategy/informational sessions this evening and tomorrow evening around the state and, if you have the time, it is imperative that you attend.

Friends and fellow Democrats,

Less than three weeks ago, voters delivered a strong rebuke to Lansing Republicans by defeating five incumbent Representatives. The people of Michigan rejected the Republican agenda of slashing taxes for corporate special interests, while hiking taxes for seniors and middle-class families and cutting funding for our kids’ schools.

Have Lansing Republicans learned their lesson? NO!

Instead, they are preparing to ram through a Tea Party platform during lame duck session, when those defeated Representatives will have zero accountability to the voters. Here are just a few of the items on the agenda:

  • Undermining workers’ rights
  • Instituting voucher-style “reform” of our public schools
  • Cutting taxes even further for corporate special interests

What can you do to fight this lame duck power grab? The Protect Working Families coalition is organizing events this week all across the state to mobilize for the lame duck session.

Stop the Takeover of Public Education in Michigan
If you don’t know enough about how extremist are proposing the elimination of public education, read this this

A Message to all Supporters of Democracy

The people of 77 the 83 counties in Michigan voted successfully to repeal Michigan’s Emergency Manager Law. Governor Rick Snyder and the extremist-controlled Michigan legislature are now attempting to circumvent the will of the people by passing new legislation that is every bit as unconstitutional, anti-democratic and vile as the law the people have just rejected. The proposed bill, HB 6004 “Educational Achievement Authority”, violates our State Constitution and will substitute unelected bureaucrats with dictatorial powers for local, duly elected representatives of the people. Tell Governor Snyder and the Michigan Legislature to vote no on any legislation that attempts to circumvent the will of citizens who voted to repeal PA 4, the Emergency Manager Law.

That’s why I created a petition to The Michigan State House, The Michigan State Senate, and Governor Rick Snyder.
Will you sign this petition? Click here:

Please forward this to your email address contacts and add to your Facebook page. It is important that this petition be circulated ASAP as the Michigan legislature is currently holding hearings on HB 6004. We have had over 2100 citizens add their names so far, but we need thousands of signers to sufficiently represent and reiterate the will of Michigan’s citizens.

    Thanks for all you do!

A basic core principle from the Michigan Republican Party web site:

“The most effective, responsible, and responsive government is government closest to the people.”

Tell the Republican leadership in Lansing to walk the talk.
