Shutting down Line 5 oil pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac unites MI-01 candidate Lon Johnson with GOP mayor

Lon Johnson, the former Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, has made shutting down Enbridge Oil’s notorious Line 5 oil pipeline the center of his primary bid for Michigan’s 1st Congressional District seat. The controversial pipeline runs under the Straits of Mackinac and the horror of it rupturing is nearly too horrible to contemplate. Imagine that it fails in the […]

PHOTOS: Rachel Maddow brings a message of hope to Flint, says the #FlintWaterCrisis is now a national problem to solve

Last night Anne and I were privileged to watch the taping of Rachel Maddow’s Flint Town Hall. It was an astonishing experience for a variety reasons and I think it has the potential to be a game changer in terms of how the poisoning of Flint’s drinking water by the Snyder administration is perceived by people outside of Flint and […]

LGBT Forum shocker: Proven voter model shows support for civil rights ballot initiative in Michigan at only 42%

LGBT Forum shocker: Proven voter model shows support for civil rights ballot initiative in Michigan at only 42%

[NOTE: This piece has been edited to correct a claim that Wayne State University Law School Dean Jocelyn Benson had helped draft the ballot language. I have corrected this post and issued a correction with audio HERE.] Last night, the Jim Toy LGBT Community Center sponsored […]

It’s no secret that Planned Parenthood, an organization that does more to prevent abortions than any other, is under attack. It seems that Planned Parenthood is always under attack but this time the religious zealots in Congress are willing to shut down the government to end funding of Planned Parenthood and prevent them from offering the myriad health services they […]

Another progressive take on the #BlackLivesMatter protest at Netroots Nation

Another progressive take on the #BlackLivesMatter protest at Netroots Nation

I’m on a listserv along with Working Families Party communications director Joe Dinkin. He posted his initial response to the #BlackLivesMatter protest at the presidential candidates townhall meeting at Netroots Nation last Saturday that I found to be one of the most impressive analyses of the event that I’ve read. He turned it into a piece for The Nation titled […]

The following is a guest post from Sommer Foster, the Political Director for Equality Michigan and a long time political activist. Anne and I have shared our perspectives as white progressive allies. Sommer brings the […]

[PHOTOS] #BlackLivesMatter protest at Netroots Nation through the eyes of a photographer.

Processing… I’m processing the protest. I’m processing the articles written about the protest. I’m processing comments people are leaving about the protest. I’m processing how prevalent racism still is, even in the progressive community. And I’m processing my photographs. As I go through the hundreds of images I took during the presidential candidate town hall protest at Netroots Nation on […]
