Heads up! – DFA scholarships to Netroots Nation and Senate Dems Kick-off Party

by

By now, you’ve likely heard about Netroots Nation and the fact that the largest annual assembly of progressive activists in the country is happening in Detroit this year.

Yesterday, we learned that progressive hero Elizabeth Warren is going to be the keynote speaker, a major coup and a major draw for the event, for sure.

There are a couple of other newsworthy tidbits to pass along about Netroots Nation. First off, every year Democracy for America offers 30 scholarships for activists that deserve to be at Netroots Nation but simply cannot afford to go. The top five vote-getters automatically receive a scholarship. The remaining 25 are chosen by a selection committee and the deadline is May 12th so it’s not too late to apply. Hop over to their website if you’d like to throw your name in the hat for a scholarship.

Here’s the low down:

Every year, the Netroots Nation Convention has provided progressive activists and candidates a forum to strengthen the online community and grow the progressive movement while inspiring action and growing new ideas to affect change. Applicants for the DFA Netroots Nation scholarship must have a demonstrated commitment to growing the progressive movement whether through blogging, organizing, issue advocacy or electoral work.

Any DFA Member or participant in the larger netroots or progressive movement may apply for the scholarship. Applicants are encouraged to solicit support for the application from their personal networks. Individuals may only vote for each applicant once. A select group of scholarships will be awarded solely on the basis of support gathered. The remaining scholarships will be awarded on merit at the discretion of the selection committee. The selection committee is comprised of DFA and Netroots Nation staff. Previous Netroots Nation scholar recipients are not allowed to win again.

Scholars will be notified by May 16th and will be asked to commit to attending. The scholarship provides four nights of hotel and the conference fee. Scholars are responsible for their own travel and food expenses. For complete rules and restrictions, please click here.

Also, the Michigan State Senate Democrats are hosting the kick-off party this year. This not-to-be-missed event happens on Wednesday, July 16 from 7:00pm – 10:00pm.

The Michigan Senate Democrats and the DLCC would like to welcome Netroots Nation 2014 attendees to Detroit with a kick off party at the Detroit Beer Company.

We will be joined by Michigan Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer as well as other special guests.

More information will be posted on our Facebook event page, but please plan your travel schedules to Netroots Nation accordingly so you can join us at the 2014 Kick Off Party.
