Introducing AFSCME’s “GIFtroit”, a humorous but pointed look at Detroit’s very serious financial crisis

by

Sometimes ya just gotta laugh

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) has put together a website that tells the story of Detroit’s financial crisis. While most of what your read these days is peril and gloom and desperation, AFSCME has taken a more light-hearted approach, telling the story using humorous animated GIFs.

It’s called “GIFtroit” and, while it is hilarious, make no mistake: they cut to chase about some of the mythology that has arisen regarding how Detroit got to where it is today and who is responsible for causing it. They also remind us who should NOT be forced to pay an even bigger price than they already have: modestly paid public-service workers.

The decline of Detroit industry during the past 40 years was not the fault of modestly paid public-service workers. When Wall St. bankers and corporations helped saddle Detroit with crippling debt, public workers stayed and kept the city running.

Take a look at “GIFtroit” then use the links at the bottom of their page to share it with your friends. It’s important that people get a more realistic look at Detroit’s tragic situation. The humor makes it go down just a little bit easier.
