Conservatives in freak-out mode over Obamacare forms allowing you to register to vote

by

It’s just like ACORN!!!

Anti-Obama(care) types are appoplectic about the fact that the forms that people fill out to sign up for health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act will also allow you to register to vote.

“We all knew that it was transparent that Obamacare was just another vehicle to recruit the next generation of Democrats. Now that has been confirmed,” gushed Michelle Malkin.

It’s the same as ACORN, according to one blathering idiot at Breitbart.com:

ACORN solidified its power in whatever community it was in by helping people with government assistance applications and voter registration. After we processed your public assistance application, we knew where you belonged to each government program. When it came time to fill a bus to the polls, the same person that helped you get food stamps or tax advice could show up and press you to go vote.

Texan Republican Senator John Cornyn tweeted:

Yes, it appears that Obamacare is just a stealth Democratic plan to get the poor to vote for Democrats.

Except, you know, that it’s not. Turns out that a law passed in 1993, the National Voter Registration Act, actually requires the federal government to offer voter registration to anyone who accesses government services. It’s more commonly known as the “Motor Voter” bill and it’s been on the books for two decades.

But, hey, let’s not confuse conservatives with the facts. It makes a much more effective meme to say that Obamacare is just the latest ACORNlike effort to enfranchise the poor. And Goddess knows we can’t have THAT.
