UPDATED: Michigan House votes in favor of Medicaid expansion 76 to 31

I’ve never been more optimistic. Keep up the activism.

UPDATED with links to a new action tool and a petition to be delivered directly to the Senate. See below.

I was hopeful, then I was nervous and now I’m genuinely surprised — in the best possible way.

I’m thrilled by the number of Michigan Representatives who voted in favor of Medicaid expansion. The margin is especially significant because so many were against it until now.

I don’t have all the particulars yet. But, clearly, common sense prevailed late Thursday night. Even more important, the best interests of Michigan and its citizens took precedence over politics. Democrats and Republicans obviously worked together to strike a compromise. That’s something you don’t see every day around here.

This isn’t over. The bill still has to clear the Senate, which may be a harder sell. But the weight of the yes votes in the House is encouraging.

Keep showing your support by contacting your Senator, using this action tool from Michigan Consumers for Healthcare or signing this new petition created by Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan that goes directly to the Senate.

— whatever it takes to let the legislature know that a majority of Michigan citizens, businesses and healthcare providers want Medicaid expansion to pass.

We live and work here. And we vote. Our voices count.
