My mother would be very proud

Well this doesn’t happen every day

My mother was an early feminist in the late 70s/early 80s. She marched on Washington, D.C. for the Equal Rights Amendment. My first “activism” action was to join her and a handful of other ladies on a road trip for a similar march in Chicago where Bella Abzug and Gloria Steinem and many other leading feminists spoke.

And we always had Ms. magazine hanging around. When I was around ten years old, I read Ms. magazine all the time. It had a significant impact on my perceptions about women and how they are viewed and treated in society.

Yesterday, a post we put up was linked and photos we took were posted at Ms. magazine’s website in a piece titled “The War on Women, Michigan Front”.

She would have been very proud of that.

But there’s something she would have been even MORE proud of, I think.

It’s just another episode in a long, long string of episodes where some Michigan Republican men can’t get into any sort of back and forth with a woman without whipping out the sexist derogatory slurs. This time, it’s state House Representative Frank Foster.

While visiting the neighborhood of a Michigan Nurses Association staffer, he called her a “cunt”.

Congressman Dan Benishek getting roasted by Progress Michigan & nurses union for PAC fundraising

What? ME?! Oh, you shouldn’t have…

Last year, Republican Congressman Dan Benishek headlined a One Nations PAC “Scotch and Cigars” fundraiser. This year, he was again listed on the invitation as being an honoree. This prompted a press release by the Michigan Nurses Association and an online petition by Progress Michigan. Here is a bit of the press release:

Michigan Nurses hold townhall mtgs for Camp & Upton…since they won’t hold their own

Since Rep. Camp Won’t Hold Citizens Town Hall, Nurses Will Do It For Him on Monday
Monday’s event gives citizens opportunity they’ve been denied by supercommittee member

MIDLAND – Since Congressman Dave Camp of Midland has denied multiple requests to hold a public town hall to listen to residents’ input about the decisions he will make on the supercommittee, members of the Michigan Nurses Association will do it for him Monday evening.

While failing to hold a public town hall for his constituents since his appointment to the supercommittee – including this week, while Camp was home during the congressional break – Camp has collected hundreds of thousands of dollars for his re-election campaign from Wall Street corporations and special interests.
