Michigan GOP fights off takeover of party by tea party with help of Governor Rick Snyder

Michigan GOP fights off takeover of party by tea party with help of Governor Rick Snyder

And he accuses US of fighting amongst ourselves? Governor, please.

With all of the attention that was paid these past two weeks between the race for the Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, it was easy to miss the fact that the Michigan Republican Party had a highly-contested race themselves. When the dust had settled at their convention on Saturday, incumbent chair Bobby Schostak had won a narrow 833 to 768 vote over tea party challenger Todd Courser, a favorite of the so-called “Freedom Caucus”. Courser ran on a platform of “liberty and constitutional conservatism”.

The election was so close that Governor Snyder made a surprise appearance at Michigan GOP convention, taking time from the National Governors Association meeting in progress in Washington, D.C. to make an impassioned plea for Schostak’s candidacy. He was even seen pulling people aside to lobby for their votes.

He then accused Democrats of doing the very thing his party was engaged in as he gave his speech. Details after the jump.

Michigan GOP Rep. Dave Camp attacks Congressional Budget Office when it gives him answers he doesn’t like

Michigan GOP Rep. Dave Camp attacks Congressional Budget Office when it gives him answers he doesn’t like

As usual, it’s the messenger that’s the problem

Republicans have decided that the biggest, wettest kiss they can give their corporate owners is to make all money they earn overseas exempt from taxes, even if they bring that money back to the USA. It’s called a Territorial Tax System and it’s used by only a handful of countries — France, Hong Kong, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

When the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) took a look at the impact of the USA using a territorial tax system, not surprisingly they found that it would increase the shipment of jobs and manufacturing to other countries besides the USA. Who could have guessed? If you only tax money earned in the United States, companies will beat a path to nearest border to make sure they earn as much money as possible outside of the United States. It’s the weirdest thing.

When the Republicans heard that the CBO predicted this behavior and the subsequent negative impact on our nation’s economy and job situation, their response wasn’t, “Oh, shit, we better rethink this.” No, their response was to shout, “LIAR!”

PLEASE NOTE: The GOP is about to let us slip back into recession to protect the rich

PLEASE NOTE: The GOP is about to let us slip back into recession to protect the rich

We don’t have a revenue problem; we have a Republican problem Let’s remind ourselves what happened on January 1, 2013. The Bush tax breaks expired and taxes went up on every American who pays income tax. That was the only reason Republicans were willing to “compromise” and vote to end some of the tax breaks for the richest 1 percent. […]

The rank hypocrisy of Michigan Republican Senator Joe Hune

The rank hypocrisy of Michigan Republican Senator Joe Hune

Good for the goose but not for the gander

Last year, Michigan Republican Senator Joe Hune sponsored a bill, which was signed into law during the inflamed duck session, that prevents any school board member from voting on school district contracts if they or any family member are an employee covered by that contract. While this may seem reasonable to avoid conflicts of interest, it’s causing controversy in some school districts where school board members may have relatives who are teachers or district employees.

However, the bill represents an enormous level of hypocrisy from Hune. He sits on a Senate Health Policy Committee and is the chair of the Insurance Committee, making crucial decisions on legislation that affects these industries, industries that make financial contributions to Hune’s campaign.

What’s changed about the GOP is that they’re willing to sabotage the economy

What’s changed about the GOP is that they’re willing to sabotage the economy

How the world’s biggest spenders attack the most conservative government spendthrift since Eisenhower Speaking to House Democrats Friday, Bill Clinton reminded his audience how Republicans’ concerns about the deficit depend on who is in the White House. Having eliminated the deficit he inherited from Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and then being forced to watch the work he did […]

UPDATED – GOPocrisy Alert: Michigan GOP legislators want to take control of overseeing our natural areas

UPDATED – GOPocrisy Alert: Michigan GOP legislators want to take control of overseeing our natural areas

It’s like they don’t realize how ironic they are being

Currently in Michigan, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in in charge of protecting and preserving land and other property under its control from damage or improper use. The Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act says that “it is the goal of this state to encourage the lasting conservation of biological diversity.” Republican state Senator Tom Casperson from Escanaba, however, wants the legislature to take over that overseeing of the protection of our natural areas in Michigan and to forbid the DNR from passing any laws or taking any action that will set aside land for the purpose of maintaining biological diversity.

This is from the party that repeatedly tells us that regulations are strangling our state and frequently advocates for a part-time legislature. The irony is rich and deep.

If immigration reform were supposed to make the GOP look less like the party of intolerant white guys, it isn’t working

If immigration reform were supposed to make the GOP look less like the party of intolerant white guys, it isn’t working

But did we mention that Marco Rubio’s parents were born in Cuba? Immigration reform isn’t a chance for Republicans to win more Latino votes. It’s their only hope to stop getting fewer and fewer Latino votes. Senator Marco Rubio, who would like to be the GOP nominee in 2016, knows that to win the presidency, he at least needs to […]

Michigan Gov. Snyder concerned about Medicaid expansion diverting uninsured from emergency room-based health care

Michigan Gov. Snyder concerned about Medicaid expansion diverting uninsured from emergency room-based health care

Wait. What???

With Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act poised to free nearly half a million Michiganders from having to get their healthcare from emergency rooms and save the state $10 million in the first ten years, our Governor, Rick Snyder, appears to be wavering because of ‘capacity’. This is despite a report that came out this month indicating that Michigan doctors are ready, willing and able to take on the influx of uninsured patients.

So, what, we should just let them keep going to emergency rooms for their healthcare? More after the jump.

Republican Senator Patrick Colbeck admits Dick DeVos bankrolled Right to Work drive in Michigan

Republican Senator Patrick Colbeck admits Dick DeVos bankrolled Right to Work drive in Michigan

Bra·zen [breyzuhn], adjective: shameless or impudent

On January 15th, Americans for Prosperity held a “Citizens Watchdog Training” in Warren, Michigan. As usual, the entrance fee was a nominal $10 because he entire event was heavily subsidized and underwritten by the Koch Brothers-funded corporate front group.

At the event, tea party Senator Patrick Colbeck was very forthright in explaining how multimillionaire Dick DeVos and Michigan Republican Chair Ron Weiser bankrolled the effort to make Michigan the country’s 24th Right to Work state. Audio and transcript after the jump.

Snyder admits making Michigan a Right to Work state was never about creating jobs

Snyder admits making Michigan a Right to Work state was never about creating jobs

My, my, Governor. That didn’t take long.

Remember when Governor Snyder and his Republican colleagues were telling us all how important making Michigan a Right to Work state was for improving our economy? “It’s freedom to work!” they said. “It will make us competitive with other states!” they claimed. “It will create more and better jobs!” they told us.

Turns out that even Governor Snyder doesn’t believe that tripe. Less than a month after his Economic Development Corporation spent $144,000 on a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal touting our new Right to Work status as one of the attractive benefits of setting up shop in Michigan, this week Snyder admitted it’s all a damn lie.

Michigan Republicans resort to rigging presidential elections knowing it’s their only hope of winning

Michigan Republicans resort to rigging presidential elections knowing it’s their only hope of winning

Who wants to belong to a political party that can’t win fairly?

Michigan Republicans’ intend to change the rules to assign our state’s presidential electoral votes by Congressional District. While this may seem sort of innocuous, once you realize how severely they have gerrymandered our state, the implications of this begins to sink in. Here’s the reality:

  • More Michiganders voted for Democrats statewide than for Republicans
  • President Obama would have gotten less electoral votes than Mitt Romney in the 2012 election

I will be writing more about this topic but I wanted to draw your attention to some of the smartest writing and smartest advice on this topic that I have seen yet. It comes from MMColo at Daily Kos. Their article is titled “Republicans Plan to Steal the Presidency (And might not be able to ) and How Democrats Can Stop Them”.

It’s all there, waiting for you, after the jump.
