Pete Hoekstra to women: I don’t want your vote, says Lilly Ledbetter Act “shouldn’t be the law”

Now we KNOW who will be Michigan’s Senator after November 2012

Pete Hoekstra, he of the catastrophic “Yellow Girl” anti-China campaign ad that all but destroyed any chance he had of competing against Senator Debbie Stabenow in November, has now sealed his fate. How? By pretty much guaranteeing that he won’t get any women to vote for him.

During a campaign stop yesterday, he was asked about the Lilly Ledbetter Act, the law that allows women to sue companies if they pay men more than women for the same job. Hoekstra responded that it shouldn’t be the law.

I’m not kidding…

Mitt Romney checked: turns out he supports equal pay for women (sorta)

Sam, we’ll get back to you on that

Yesterday, when asked if Mitt Romney supports equal pay for men and women doing the same job, his campaign team didn’t have an answer. They had to check to see if he actually support women’s rights or not. The shocking thing about this is not that they weren’t sure. It’s probably hard to know when you’re a Republican these days and you’ve spent such enormous energy going after the rights of women in so many different areas. No, what’s actually shocking is that the event was a conference call during a week when Mitt Romney is trotting out his female supporters and his utter lies all over the country to prove he’s pro-women.…

Republicans jump the shark in their “War on Women” crusade – Release “Obama’s War on Women” video

Hoo boy…

Psychological projection or projection bias is a psychological defense mechanism where a person subconsciously denies his or her own attributes, thoughts, and emotions, which are then ascribed to the outside world, usually to other people. Thus, projection involves imagining or projecting the belief that others originate those feelings.”

That definition of projection succinctly defines what is happening with the Republican Party at the moment. They have spent the past three years since President Obama took office doing everything they can to roll back the clock in terms of any gains made by women in this country. From enacting harsh abortion restrictions to reducing their access to health care and so much more, Republicans have been on a non-stop crusade to take away some of the basic rights that women have secured for themselves over the past few decades.…

Pres. Obama signs Executive Order establishing a National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security

This morning, President Obama signed an Executive Order establishing a National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security. You can read the Executive Order HERE (pdf) and the comprehensive plan itself HERE (pdf). This is the part of the Executive Order that is most compelling for me:

Sec. 2. National Action Plan. A National Action Plan shall be created pursuant to the process outlined in Presidential Policy Directive 1 and shall identify and develop activities and initiatives in the following areas:

(a) National integration and institutionalization. Through interagency coordination, policy development, enhanced professional training and education, and evaluation, the United States Government will institutionalize a gender-responsive approach to its diplomatic, development, and defense-related work in conflict-affected environments.

Planned Parenthood gets a welcoming reception in Ann Arbor

Planned Parenthood arrived in Ann Arbor, Michigan yesterday with its giant pink bus. They are currently on a tour around the country to raise awareness about the Republican effort to defund Planned Parenthood.

Over 500 supporters showed up to show that they “Stand with Planned Parenthood” against this effort to restrict this terrific organization’s ability to provide health services to women across the country. They started out at “The Diag” on the campus of the University of Michigan where various speakers talked about Planned Parenthood’s services and the valuable role they play in the lives of both women and men in this country.…

The birth of a feminist

The other day, I blogged about President Obama coming out in firm and vocal support for the Paycheck Fairness Act. I told the story of my mother wearing a button with “59¢” on it, representing the amount of money a woman earned over thirty years ago for every dollar a man made to do the same job.

Today, as I said, that number has soared to an astounding [sarcasm]77¢[/sarcasm].

One of my readers, a self-described “little old lady from Arizona” sent me a story from her childhood that brings into sharp focus what this egregious discrepancy means where the rubber hits the road.…

President Obama will push for passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act

When I was a kid, my mom was an ardent feminist and fought hard for women’s rights. We attended rallies, she lobbied her members of Congress, and she was vocally outspoken about it. One of the buttons she wore on her purse was a simple forest green button with a simple white “59¢” it. The “59¢” represented the amount of money that women made, on average, for every dollar a man made doing the same job.

Today, 30 years later, that amount is about 77&cent”.

There is a law that Democrats have been trying to pass for quite some time that would change that.…
