Support a Michigan-born activist for a DFA scholarship. It costs you nothing but 2 minutes of your time.

Bonnie Duncan deserves your support

Last week, Alex Showerman from Democracy for America did a guest post about DFA’s scholarship program to the Netroots Nation conference every year.

Many esteemed activists have received scholarships over the years and I typically promote the candidacy of one or two of them. This year I’m asking you to give one of your votes to Bonnie Duncan, a former Michigander now living in Vermont and running a health food store. Why? Click through to find out.

Netroots Nation and Democracy for America: A match made in progressive heaven

This is a guest post from my good friend Alex Showerman who serves as the New Media Manager for Democracy for America (DFA). Every year, DFA sponsors scholarships for a selection of activists who would not be able to attend the Netroots Nation convention otherwise.

Calling all progressive activists! The deadline for submitting a Netroots Nation session proposal is soon!

The most energizing conference you will EVER attend

As regular readers of this blog know, I am a regular attendee of the national Netroots Nation conference. Last year, Anne got involved as a staff photographer and you can be sure we’ll both be there again this year in San Jose, June 20-23. Netroots Nation is, simply put, the most high-value conference of the year for progressive activists. You can get a flavor of it by reading our posts from last year HERE, HERE, and HERE.

A big part of what makes Netroots Nation work is that the panels and trainings are put on by some of the top activists in the country. Some you may know, others you may not. Either way, the quality of the panels and trainings is exceptional. Along the way, you’ll make some amazing connections, as well, connections that will stay with you into the future.

Find out how YOU can participate by submitting a panel or training proposal for Netroots Nation 2013 after the jump.

A photographer’s perspective of Netroots Nation, PHOTOBLOG Part 1 — Let’s get to work!

Energized for the work ahead

This was my first year at Netroots Nation. I was one of the Netroots Nation staff photographers, and feel very privileged to be included in such a talented group. My first experience with Netroots might have been quite different if I had just bought a ticket and gone. I tend to be a little shy in those kinds of settings. I would have gone to the talks that interested me, hung with people I knew and maybe spent more time on my computer than I needed to. I would have had a great experience, but being a staff photographer enabled me to experience it in a unique way and it has inspired me to write this as a prologue to my clearer voice, my photographs.

Photos after the jump.

Netroots for the Troops 2012 recap – blood was spilled (PHOTOS)

It’s what we do

The Netroots for the Troops 2012 went off almost entirely without a hitch. Although, due to a lack of donations this year, we were only able to pack 150 boxes, half of what we’ve done previously, it was still a wonderful thing to behold.

[Photos by Anne C. Savage (with watermark) and angelajean (without watermark)]

Here we are, staging the boxes and their contents:

This year, we did only one line down the table and slowed things down to make it less frenetic and more enjoyable. Also, because the boxes were just so danged full this year, we had a major bottleneck at the taping area as nearly everyone had to repack their box more efficiently.…

Netroots Nation 2012 recap

Whew! That was intense!

28 hours of driving and over four days of intense networking and progressive liberal immersion later, I’m finally catching my breath from Netroots Nation 2012. This year my wife and blogging partner Anne joined me and was a staff photographer for the event. She took over 5,000 photos and we’ll have photoblogs rolling out over the next few days.

Some of the highlights for me after the jump.

Netroots for the Troops — Progressives turning out to help out our military men and women

Yes, I’m asking for your money again

Yes, yes, yes. It’s that time again. Time for the awesomeness that is Netroots for the Troops®. Wait, you don’t know what NFTT is? NFTT is a what I call “The 33-Minute Miracle”. I’ll tell you why in a minute.

Every year at the annual Netroots Nation conference, the largest event of the year for progressive blogggers, writers and activists, a group of dedicated individuals pull of an major service event where hundreds of CARE packages are assembled and then shipped to our troops over seas. This year, we’re including some vets that are in U.S. hospitals, returned from war.

You can help by making a donation HERE.

(Much more after the jump.)

C’mon, EclectaReaders. We can do WAY better than this. It costs NOTHING to support this worthy effort.

You may have seen my previous post about Lauren Reichelt (TheFatLadySings) and her effort to expand the number of “People of Color” at Netroots Nation by bringing a large group of folks from her area. To do this, she is applying for a $50,000 Pepsi Refresh grant. Right now, her grant stands at a sad #104.

From Netroots Nation coordinator Raven Brooks:

“The key to winning the Pepsi Refresh grant is accumulating daily voters. Netroots Nation has agreed to help us organize to win this grant. Sign up at this link to receive an email once a day providing you links to vote.

There’s one big problem with the Netroots Nation conference – and YOU can help fix that!

I’ve been to two Netroots Nation conferences so far and, wow, what a rush. But, there is one thing about it that bothers me and I am not the only one: it’s pretty much all white people.

Seriously. We are a lily white group of progressive conference attendees.

There is an effort afoot to help fix that and without spending a dime, YOU can help. Your VOTE can help us win a grant to send people of color to Providence for Netroots Nation 2012.

Last year at NN11, I met and became close friends with Lauren Reichelt (aka “TheFatLadySings“).…
