Democratic Senator Gretchen Whitmer drops out of 2014 gubernatorial race

And then there were three

Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer announced today that she will NOT be a candidate for Governor in Michigan in 2014. Her stepping aside narrows the immediate field from four to three: 2010 candidate and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, Detroit-area Congressman Gary Peters and former MI-07 Congressman Mark Schauer. While that’s not to say that others won’t throw their hat into the ring, these three are certainly the top three at the moment.

My analysis after the jump.

Michigan’s Emergency Manager situation gets coverage by MSNBC

Reverend Al Sharpton covered Michigan’s Emergency Manager law last night on Politics Nation. My now-famous chart showing the number of African Americans that will be impacted by this was mentioned with credit to me at around the 2:30 minute mark. They also used my audio of Emergency Manager Joe Harris without attribution. That comes in around 5:50 and is incorrectly identified as him speaking on a radio show (it was during a training session for potential Emergency Managers held in February 2011.)

The guests are Lansing mayor Virg Bernero and Rev. Jesse Jackson. Jackson will be among a coalition of activists who will marching on Rick Snyder’s town on Martin Luther King, Jr.…

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero welcomes Occupy Lansing protesters to the Capitol

Only a handful of mayors have voiced support of the hundreds of Occupations going on across the country. Most have been on the west coast.

LIVEBLOG: Occupy Lansing – Mayor Virg Bernero in complete support

I’ll be live-blogging the Occupy Lansing event in Lansing, Michigan today. One thing that sets this particular event apart from many of the others is that the mayor of Lansing, Virg Bernero, is in total support of it. He has sent portable toilets, garbage dumpsters and given the protesters a permit without an expiration date to protesters at Reutter Park where the encampment started earlier this week. Here’s his Facebook update from Wednesday:

Our political system has become increasingly corportized, privatized and profitized by the filthy rich. The unholy alliance of Washington and Wall Street have conspired against regular folks to all but obliterate the American Dream and bastardise our democracy.…

Sell the Mackinac Bridge???! – Oh, hellz NO!

Michigan political reporter Tim Skubick noted last week on his blog that Michigan Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Snyder wouldn’t take selling the Mackinac Bridge off the table.

Absolutely serious.

The Mackinac Bridge is a Michigan icon. It is often how our state is represented in graphical form. Completed in 1957, it was built without the use of a single taxpayer dollar. At five miles long, it is currently the third longest bridge in the world and the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western hemisphere.

Simply put, the Mackinac Bridge IS Michigan. And GOPosauric businessman Rick Snyder has suggested that selling it for a one-time cash infusion to solve Michigan’s financial woes might be under consideration.…

Do NOT vote for Obama or Biden on Nov. 2nd! I mean it!

Having read numerous blog entries, articles and diaries on Daily Kos about hippy punching and whining prohibitions and bucking up demands I have become convinced and hereby issue this firm directive to all “base” Democrats:

DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, VOTE FOR BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA OR JOE ROBINETTE BIDEN, JR. ON NOVEMBER 2ND, 2010.

If you do, you will be wasting your vote.

(Bet you didn’t know his middle name was Robinette, did you?)

I’m going to go a bit further and suggest you also do not vote for the following people:

  • Robert Lane Gibbs
  • David M. Axelrod
  • Rahm Israel Emanuel
  • Larry Henry Summers
  • Timothy Franz Geithner

Votes for these men are wasted votes.…

Why Michigan (all???) Democrats should be scared

Michigan dodged a bullet last week when we chose Virg Bernero as our Democratic candidate for governor over Blue Dog Andy Dillon.

But here’s something to chew on:

Number of people who voted for a Republican gubernatorial candidate in last week’s primary election in Michigan: 1,047,048

Number of people who voted for a Democratic gubernatorial candidate in last week’s primary election in Michigan: 528,119

That’s a 2:1 ratio. That’s an “enthusiasm gap”, kids, I suspect it is playing out similarly across the country.

So what are we going to do about it?

May I suggest hooking up with your local Organizing for America (OFA) group?…

Will a Tea Partier ensure a Dem Michigan governor?

The Democratic gubernatorial race in Michigan right now is a bit of a clown show. The front runner, Lt. Governor John Cherry has left the race. A former state Treasurer got in and out in less than a week. Even George Perles, former Mich.State Univ. football coach has been suggested as a candidate. Right now the mayor of Lansing Virg Bernero, two state Reps, Alma Wheeler-Smith and Speaker of the House Andy Dillon, and Genesee County treasurer Dan Kildee are all in.

The GOP is putting up a number of candidates in including Pete Hoekstra, Rick Snyder and AG Mike Cox (yes, that’s really his name.)

But now comes Tea Partier Stacey Mathia.…

Michigan’s Gubernatorial Clown Show

You could write a book about what’s already happened in the race to be the next governor in Michigan. But the fun never stops.

Last week the former state treasurer under Democratic governor Jim Blanchard, a man by the name of Robert Bowman, got into the race that currently only has two Democratic candidates (Rep. Alma Wheeler-Smith and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero.)

Today he called it quits.

He was a candidate for four days.

No. Seriously. Four days.

Cue the accusations that his candidacy was nixed by the Obama administration in three…two…one…

I’m just sayin’…
