A little Valentine’s Day fun from We Are the People Michigan: “No more sweetheart deals”

It’s true love

A fun video from our friends at We are the People Michigan:

They have a petition circulating:

Dear Legislator,

Almost one year ago, the state Legislature approved a $1.8 billion tax cut for big corporations that was paid for by slashing funding for public education.

The new business tax has failed to create more and better jobs for Michigan workers since it took effect in January, and yet, this year’s new budget proposal includes additional cuts to K-12 schools.

We can’t afford more handouts and sweetheart deals for corporate CEOs at the expense of our students and local schools.

Another GOP casualty: Tax break for charitable giving ends in Michigan on December 31st

You know that gigantic, $1.5 billion dollar tax cut Republicans gave Michigan businesses this year? I’ve been ranting and raving all year about how it was paid for in part by cutting a cool billion out of education. But there’s still half a billion that came from other places. One of the big cuts was to eliminate the tax exemption Michiganders can currently receive by making a charitable contribution.

The Michigan charitable giving tax credit expires at the end of the year, and charities are expecting the amount people donate to charities to drop as a result.

The charitable giving credit was ended as part of Governor Snyder’s effort to pay for a business tax cut of more than $1.5 billion.

Obama gets the Senate to be bipartisan

Last night the Senate voted for cloture on the tax cut deal the Obama administration negotiated with the Republicans. The vote was 83-15.

When was the last time the Senate voted as nearly a single voice on anything?!

Somehow this will get spun as a horrendous failure for the president I’m sure. I’m guessing the several million people whose unemployment checks will keep coming will disagree.

Final vote on the package in the Senate may happen later today. What will happen in the House is still a question mark as many members of Congress are still fighting for a better deal.…

Most Dems support tax cut deal

Gee, what surprise. Turns out most Democrats think Congress should pass the tax cut deal hammered out by president Obama. So says a report by the Pew Research Center and another by ABC News/Washington Post. Republicans like it about the same or even a bit more.

Pew Research says 63% support it. ABC/WasPo says 68%. Most of the major self-described progressive left claims nobody likes it or, rather, nobody should like it.

And, like most well-crafted negotiated settlements, almost nobody does truly like it. But MOST think it should be passed. I’m betting it will be.

I’m just sayin’…

Krauthammer is right? Holy cats!

On my way to work I pass by a town called Hell, Michigan. This morning it was frosty, frozen and snow-covered.

Now I know why.

Charles Krauthammer points out what so many on both sides of the political divide seem to have missed: the tax cut/unemployment extension deal negotiated by the Obama administration achieves more progressive goals than it does Republican goals.

Barack Obama won the great tax-cut showdown of 2010 – and House Democrats don’t have a clue that he did. In the deal struck this week, the president negotiated the biggest stimulus in American history, larger than his $814 billion 2009 stimulus package.…

Obama’s Tax Deal: A GOOD Deal

Like so many other progressives, I’ve been pretty politically-existentially angsty about the recent tax cut deal President Obama struck with the hostage takers Republicans. However, after listening to his press conference yesterday and learning more about it, I’ve come to realize that, not only did he really have no choice but to cut a deal, the deal he got is pretty damn good for Democrats.

First off, have a look at what’s in the deal (fact sheet HERE):

  • Working families will not lose their tax cut. A typical working family faced a tax increase of over $3,000 on January 1st.

The Obama Tax Cuts: To be or not to be?

Remember that dreaded device that Republicans hated so much: Reconciliation? That was the one they said perverted the Constitution when Democrats were looking to use it during health insurance reform. Well, back in the day when George W. Bush was president, Republicans didn’t think it was so danged bad. In fact, they loved them some reck and silly ayshun just fine, thank you very much. In fact, they loved it so much that they used it to pass a massive, budget-busting package of tax cuts for both middle class and über-wealthy people alike.

Here’s the thing, though: things passed under reconciliation sunset (expire) after ten years.…
