Where are the “preemptive whingers” now that Social Security cuts are off the table?

Back in January, I wrote a piece called The very real attack on Obama’s mythical attack on Social Security where I talked about lefty pundits attacking President Obama for slashing Social Security, something he has never done and will not do. I was attacked myself in various venues for this piece. Those that I have described as “preemptive whingers” knew, just KNEW!, I tellzya, that it was going to happen. The so-called Catfood Commission was on a clear path to do so.

Turns out they were wrong.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus says he doesn’t think Congress will address Social Security as part of an effort to reduce government borrowing.…

Republicans blink on coupon program for Medicare

Looks like the Frank Luntz focus groups showed that old people don’t want coupons for health insurance. They want something easy to understand, reliable and non-risky. Apparently, the Republicans finally got a clue.

Senior Republicans conceded Wednesday that a deal is unlikely on a contentious plan to overhaul Medicare and offered to open budget talks with the White House by focusing on areas where both parties can agree, such as cutting farm subsidies.

On the eve of debt-reduction talks led by Vice President Biden, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (Va.) said Republicans remain convinced that reining in federal retirement programs is the key to stabilizing the nation’s finances over the long term.

GOP intros bills to “Pay China First” before Soc. Sec. recipients

You might think the GOP hates the poor and the elderly and, really, all of those that rely on entitlement payments of one sort or another. But I’ll bet you didn’t know how much they hate them.

They hate them enough to introduce a bill that prioritizes paying off our debt to China over their monthly checks.

That’s right. Congressman Tom McClintock of California has introduced H.R. 421 – “To require that the Government prioritize all obligations on the debt held by the public in the event that the debt limit is reached.” This bill would prioritize payments to China and our other creditors over our own citizens should Congress not raise the debt ceiling.…

Oh, look. The president isn’t throwing poor people under the bus.

As I predicted last weekend, the President proved last night he isn’t going to cut benefits for the poor and others on Social Security.

From his second State of the Union Address:

To put us on solid ground, we should also find a bipartisan solution to strengthen Social Security for future generations. We must do it without putting at risk current retirees, the most vulnerable, or people with disabilities; without slashing benefits for future generations; and without subjecting Americans’ guaranteed retirement income to the whims of the stock market.

I’m going to file this under “Supports the Poor” in my Obama files.…

The very real attack on Obama’s mythical attack on Social Security

Updated to correct a mistake regarding Medicare vs. Social Security.

It all started when somebody over at Firedoglake (FDL) derisively labeled President Obama’s deficit reduction study committee “The Catfood Commission”. The complete asinine nature of such an offensive characterization is epic. I assume it’s called that because they believe it will lead to old people eating catfood instead of human food because it will be all they can afford after President Obama is done gutting their social security and other benefits.

In other words, they are suggesting that President Obama is a foe to poor people.

No, really. That’s the implication: that a man who spent most of his early career on the front lines fighting for the rights of those at the lower reaches of the socio-economic ladder is, now that he’s in a position of true and awesome power, going to use that power to further damage the position of poor people.…

Tim Walberg finally makes up his mind on Social Security. Ehhhh…sorta

You may recall my blog a few weeks ago titled Tim Walberg is for privatizing social security WHILE he’s against it.

MI-07 Republican candidate Tim Walberg wasn’t for privatizing social security BEFORE he was against it, he is for privatizing security WHILE he is against it.

Seriously.

First, we have this press release from the Walberg campaign which came out the day before the 75th anniversary of Social Security (last week):

I have always opposed privatization of the Social Security system.

Then we have this quote from a recent interview Walberg did with the tea party-type group, The Independence Caucus:

“Yeah, when you say the word privatization, a seasoned campaigner like me understands that that is a buzzword that is just about as negative as a noose hanging around your neck.

But in talking with you, we all understand what that means, and I would definitely support the privatization of the so-called Social Security system.
