Michigan GOP rebuked by TWO rulings by the SAME judge. Highland Park Emgcy Mgr may be out of a job.

Take that! And THAT!

Ingham County Circuit Judge William Collette is on a roll. Yesterday he delivered two rulings that set Michigan Republicans back on their heels.

First, he ruled that an obscene and blatant power grab by Oakland County Republicans is unconstitutional.

An Ingham County judge on Wednesday struck down a controversial state law that changed the way Oakland County’s commissioner districts are drawn.

Judge William Collette said the law was unconstitutional.

Plaintiffs hailed the striking down of what they described as a “Republican power grab.” Lawyers for Gov. Rick Snyder, a defendant, said an appeal is likely.

Collette ruled the law, Public Act 280, should have received a two-thirds majority vote because it dealt with a local matter; violated the Headlee Amendment against unfunded mandates, and impinged on the rights of county voters to petition for judicial review of their reapportionment plan.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder to Endorse Mitt Romney

Millionaire Faux-Moderates Unite!

Rick Snyder isn’t the county’s least popular governor, anymore. But his anti-democratic embrace of the Emergency Manager law and the forthcoming “Tax Bomb” of 2012™ have put him on edge, reluctant to go full Scott Walker by signing the “Right to Bust Unions” legislation that may hit his desk.

This isn’t the time when you imagine the Governor wants to be put his diminished credibility on the line.

However, Snyder has decided to use his voice, which is sounding more and more like Kermit the Frog, to give a full-throated endorsement to the flagging campaign of the severely unpopular Mitt Romney.…

Snyder to reward successful schools, punish those who don’t “progress”

Penalizing struggling schools solves what exactly?

The Detroit Free Press has an article in today’s edition titled “Rick Snyder’s push to tie school funding to performance still needs a scale”. They quote Governor Rick Snyder from last April:

“In my 2013 budget message, I will be proposing that school districts receive a bonus beyond the per-pupil state foundation allowance for demonstrating student growth in reading, math and other … selected subjects,” Snyder said.

“By rewarding growth, and not only proficiency, students who have fallen behind their grade level are not forgotten. Instead, they are viewed as having the most to gain.”

While the article doesn’t have a new information in it, it raises a question many have been asking for some time.…

Governor Rick Snyder disses President Obama during his visit to Michigan

President schmesident

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder snubbed President Obama during his visit to Michigan last Friday. Instead of attending the speech at the University of Michigan, Governor Snyder instead gave a speech in Grand Rapids at the Michigan Press Association (MPA) convention. He also didn’t greet the President when he arrived in Michigan on Thursday night.

[W]hen he got the invitation to meet with Obama when he visits Michigan today, Snyder’s spokeswoman Sarah Wurfel, said, “We can’t make it work.”

Snyder was to give a speech to the Michigan Townships Association annual meeting Thursday night in Detroit when Obama was arriving at Metro Airport.

Governor Snyder sends letter to Highland Park school parents: BE AFRAID!

Warning, Warning! Danger, Will Robinson!

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder took the unprecedented step of sending a personal letter (pdf) to the parents of the Highland Park school system.

Dear Parent,
As a parent of a Highland Park School District (HPS) student, you are probably aware of the dire financial situation that exists in HPS. Over the past few weeks, together with the Departments of Treasury and Education and a review team, we have been attempting to work with your local school officials to address this situation.

There is absolutely no question that the finances of HPS have reached a crisis stage.

Michigan Gov Rick Snyder to make another fake concession, this time on school funding

Rick Snyder is the master of the “fake concession”. He takes money away from something, gives a little back and then paints it as a “concession”. It’s not.

He did it on the Earned Income Tax credit in late April:

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder’s proposed budget eliminates the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) which helps the working poor, especially those with kids.

In a dramatic concession, he’s agreed to give qualifying families $25 per child . This represents 5.8% of the EITC the average family would have received.

He will now tell everyone he made a concession. But, if his budget passes in May as it most likely will, he will have actually slashed an important bit of assistance for many poor Michiganders with families by 94.2%.

Michigan Rising’s effort to recall Gov. Rick Snyder moves ahead despite friendly fire from detractors

After reading a number of disparaging comments on the Facebook page of First Shift with Tony Trupiano, aimed at the organizers of Michigan Rising (formerly known as the Committee to Recall Rick Snyder, CRRS), I thought it would be a good idea to dig deeper and sort out truth from fiction.

I have a piece up today at A2Politico titled “Michigan Rising: Aiming to Recall Snyder—While Disgruntled Former Volunteers Target Michigan Rising” that is the result of my inquiries.

In the process of preparing the article, I met with most of the core organizing committee for Michigan Rising. I spoke with folks from Daily Kos and Fieldworks who helped them in the latter stages of the first recall effort.…

Governor Rick Snyder’s State of the State address: A mile wide and an inch deep

Last night was the second State of the State address by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder. Pundits around the state are weighing in on how shallow it was, with no specifics or new initiatives announced.

Before I get into my analysis, it’s worth noting how difficult the Republicans made it for me, my wife Anne and Christine Barry from Blogging for Michigan to get media passes. It was only through the efforts of Ann Arbor state Representative Jeff Irwin that we finally did get passes.

Once in the building, media was consigned to one room. This is normal. What was not normal was the extreme level of security.…
