Trevor Thomas finishing strong in MI-03 primary, National Organization for Women (NOW) to endorse today (UPDATED)

A campaign for us all

Facing a well-financed establishment Democrat, Trevor Thomas has mounted a spirited campaign in Michigan’s 3rd Congressional district. While Steve Pestka has been racking up endorsements from an array of long-time Democrats in our state, Thomas himself has earned a string of solid endorsements of his own, proving his progressive bona fides.

Today, the National Organization for Women (NOW) will announce their endorsement, as well.

His latest television ad and much more after the jump.

Effort to recall Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder faces opposition – FROM THE LEFT! (Updated)

With friends like these…

The group working to recall Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, Michigan Rising missed a campaign finance report deadline by a few days this month. Though this isn’t entirely uncommon given the unnecessarily complex and cumbersome reporting methods they use, it was still a black eye to a group trying to prove that it has learned its lesson from the first recall effort and pull off a feat that nearly everyone agrees will be a nearly impossible task.

The group faces stiff opposition in their fight to recall our Republican governor. However, the fight they are getting is not from Republicans, tea partiers, the business community or conservatives.

It’s from a group that describes itself “independent left”.

I’m not kidding.

The progressive left didn’t push Obama to the left, he’s been waiting for America to join him there

President Obama’s new-found populist voice has reinvigorated liberals across the country and across the blogosphere. This week, for example, you would hardly recognize the Daily Kos vaunted Recommended List. Former Obama-bashers are thrilled that the president is coming on strong, naming names and shaming the shameful in his fight to get his new jobs bill passed. Example after example of this New Obama are being praised and touted. Some of them are suddenly interested in donating to Democrats again.

Many of the liberal commentators in the mediasphere are claiming victory. “See?” they say. “All of our efforts are paying off. President Obama is finally listening to us.…

Where are the “preemptive whingers” now that Social Security cuts are off the table?

Back in January, I wrote a piece called The very real attack on Obama’s mythical attack on Social Security where I talked about lefty pundits attacking President Obama for slashing Social Security, something he has never done and will not do. I was attacked myself in various venues for this piece. Those that I have described as “preemptive whingers” knew, just KNEW!, I tellzya, that it was going to happen. The so-called Catfood Commission was on a clear path to do so.

Turns out they were wrong.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus says he doesn’t think Congress will address Social Security as part of an effort to reduce government borrowing.…

Being “in it for the long haul” and why it matters

Like many of you, I am truly frustrated with many of my liberal compadres who hoped for nearly instant gratification after Senator Barack Obama became President Barack Obama. I don’t have to tell you how absurd it is to expect years and years of conservative damage to be repaired, reversed and rejected in just a couple of years, particularly in the face of perhaps the most daunting headwind of political opposition ever experienced by a new president bolstered by an historic use of the filibuster. Add to that the rather surprising (at least to me) hostility from so many vocal people on the left and it’s nothing short of a miracle that President Obama has gotten done all of the things he has achieved.…

The very real attack on Obama’s mythical attack on Social Security

Updated to correct a mistake regarding Medicare vs. Social Security.

It all started when somebody over at Firedoglake (FDL) derisively labeled President Obama’s deficit reduction study committee “The Catfood Commission”. The complete asinine nature of such an offensive characterization is epic. I assume it’s called that because they believe it will lead to old people eating catfood instead of human food because it will be all they can afford after President Obama is done gutting their social security and other benefits.

In other words, they are suggesting that President Obama is a foe to poor people.

No, really. That’s the implication: that a man who spent most of his early career on the front lines fighting for the rights of those at the lower reaches of the socio-economic ladder is, now that he’s in a position of true and awesome power, going to use that power to further damage the position of poor people.…

Krauthammer is right? Holy cats!

On my way to work I pass by a town called Hell, Michigan. This morning it was frosty, frozen and snow-covered.

Now I know why.

Charles Krauthammer points out what so many on both sides of the political divide seem to have missed: the tax cut/unemployment extension deal negotiated by the Obama administration achieves more progressive goals than it does Republican goals.

Barack Obama won the great tax-cut showdown of 2010 – and House Democrats don’t have a clue that he did. In the deal struck this week, the president negotiated the biggest stimulus in American history, larger than his $814 billion 2009 stimulus package.…

Pragmatism has its costs

First of all, a big welcome to folks coming in from Blackwaterdog’s most-excellent blog “The only adult in the room”.

My blog entry yesterday certainly got some attention. I got over 1,100 hits on my website. It was shared on Facebook almost 1,000 times. The Daily Kos version was the #2 diary of the day, getting over 1,500 comments and nearly 700 “Recommends”.

And I got torn to shreds.

Not by everybody of course. But if you venture into the comments over at Daily Kos, it was an amazing thing to behold. I was called a liar no less than three times.…
