GOP releases latest budget proposal. Surprise: it cuts Medicare, Medicaid, & Social Security to pay for tax cuts for the rich

It’s deja vu all over again

Paul Ryan and his GOP pals released their latest budget proposal today. While it aims to eliminate the deficit by 2040. How do they hope to do this. No surprise: it cuts Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP and Social Security, leaves military spending alone and cuts taxes on the wealthy.

The New Ryan Plan leaves the coupons-for-healthcare for seniors in there but makes a minor concession of giving seniors a traditional fee-for-service option, as well.

If you are rich, the news is good:

[T]he document — with its deep spending cuts paired with tax cuts — will provide new fodder for Democrats who will paint Republicans as willing to undermine retiree health programs, but unwilling to ask wealthy taxpayers to contribute more.…

Michigan Energy & Environment for Obama Team kicks off in Ann Arbor

And they’re off!

Last night the Michigan Energy & Environment for Obama Team kicked off its effort to reelect President Obama at the Arbor Brewing Company in Ann Arbor. Environmental luminaries from around the state were in attendance in cluding Ken Berlin, the Director of the National Energy & Environment Team.

Berlin told us that the team formed 18 months go because “The environment is under bitter attack and needs to be defended. No one is going to do that if we don’t do it ourselves.”

Berlin says that cap-and-trade, a concept that actually originated with Republicans, will not be possible for “a very long time” because the GOP is “bitterly opposed to it” now.…

GOP primary candidates: “Obama wants high gas prices because…um…”

Dude, that doesn’t even make any sense

Mitt Romney claimed this week that the Obama administration wants gas prices to be high:

[Romney] called for President Barack Obama to fire what he called the “gas hike trio” of Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson.

“These three, this trio of his energy team, have been working like crazy to drive up the price of gasoline. And that’s just what they’ve done,” he said. “Given the fact he’s changed his policy, given the fact he now wants lower gasoline prices, I think its time for him to fire his gas hike trio.

AFL-CIO enthusiastically endorses President Obama for his full-throated support of labor

“I’ll place my bet on the American worker any day of the week”

Yesterday, Richard L. Trumka, the president of the AFL-CIO, sent out this statement:

This afternoon, the AFL-CIO’s General Board voted unanimously to endorse President Obama for re-election.

For many reasons, we are pledging to work with President Obama throughout the elections and in a second term. The bottom line is this: As president, Barack Obama has placed his faith in America’s working men and women to lead our country to economic recovery and our full potential. So we’re putting our faith in him.

Although the labor movement has sometimes differed with the president and often pushed his administration to do more—and do it faster—we have never doubted his commitment to a strong future for working families.

Profound examples of how the Affordable Care Act is saving lives

How dare anyone call this evil?

This first video is about Zoe. She was born with half a heart. By the time she was 6 months old, she had already had two open heart surgeries and was half-way to using up her lifetime cap. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, she is alive and will grow old.

Here’s Zoe’s mom, Stacy:

Here’s insurance that you’ve been paying for for the past 20 years but, ‘Oh, don’t get sick. Don’t have a child that was born with a heart defect, because once you reach a certain limit, you know, we’re not gonna insure them anymore.’

I can’t even fathom what’s going through the minds that want to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Wake Up Call: They Can Win

Mitt Romney is in a cult: The Republican Party.

That any American could vote for a Republican after what that Party did to this country baffles me. That the Republican they’d vote for is Mitt Romney, a transparent shill who has embraced the worst policies of Bush and Cheney, makes me angrier than Chris Christie being interrupted by state worker while ordering dinner.

Today’s polls suggest that Romney and possibly even Santorum are leading the President in national polls. You can break these polls down and connect it to swing states. The situation is still bleak for the GOP.

But after humiliating themselves and alienating anyone north of the mental Mason Dixon line, this GOP should not be competitive.…

Here’s Barack Obama’s problem: He makes it look too easy.

His is a presidency that is flooded with accomplishments and astoundingly lacking in gaffes and scandals. He has returned this economy to just about where it was before the Great Recession hit, reversing a tide of attrition that lasted nearly a decade. He ended systematic discrimination of gays and lesbians by our military and passed the first system of near universal health care in American history.

Headline you’ll never see: Big Oil takes cut in profits to help with gas prices

Patriotism has its limits (apparently)

Over the past few years, we’ve seen world record-breaking profits for the Big Oil companies, even when gas cost over $4 a gallon during President George W. Bush’s time in office. (And, yes, despite the rhetoric coming out of the mouths of nearly all Republicans at the moment blaming President Obama for the current cost of gas, you never heard them blaming Bush for that.)

The fact is, high gas prices mean high profits for oil companies.

Meanwhile, President Obama is trying to eliminate federal subsidies to these money-making monoliths. He’s also smart enough to know that global prices for oil which is a commodity will not be impacted by incremental increases in domestic oil production.…
