Time for some realistic “redefinitions”

Michele Bachmann has shown true leadership in her call recently for a “redefinition” of earmarks.

She wants to take the tiny sliver representing earmarks in the chart below and make it smaller:

“Advocating for transportation projects for ones district in my mind does not equate to an earmark.”

“I don’t believe that building roads and bridges and interchanges should be considered an earmark,” Bachmann said. “There’s a big difference between funding a tea pot museum and a bridge over a vital waterway.”

I couldn’t agree more. So now I’m going to follow her lead and suggest some further Republican “redefinitions” of my own.…

MI House candidate: “OFA is the equiv. of the brown shirts”

Dave Franklin is running for the Michigan House of Representatives seat in Michigan’s 54th district, a seat currently held by Michigan gubernatorial candidate Alma Wheeler Smith. Dave Franklin hates him some government. And Dave Franklin especially hates him some Democratic Party grassroots organizers.

Yesterday, on the Facebook page for a Tea Party protest on the campus of the University of Michigan, I refuted the accusation of one commenter that Organizing for America is an “astroturf” organization (since they are part of a political party and not secretly funded by corporate backers.) Here is his response:

OFA is the equivalent of the brown shirts.

It’s not just FOX News, people

As Rachel Maddow so clearly stated during her show last Friday, there’s a whole lotta makin’ shit up goin’ on out there.

Yes, a great deal of it is coming from the FOX News machine.

But not all of it.

All you have to do is to look at the local newspapers across the country to see that. Today’s edition of the Livingston Press & Argus is Exibit A.

There it is in blazing headline font, top story, above the fold:

It’s a story about a man who is oh-so-very-skeered of giving too much information to the gubmint about his salary and house payments and such if he’s chosen as one of the 3 million Americans sent the 69-question American Community Survey.…

Are you KIDDING me???

File this one in the “Are you effing KIDDING me???!” folder:

The Republican National Committee sent a fundraising mail piece earlier this month with a return number that leads to a phone-sex line offering “live, one-on-one talk with a nasty girl who will do anything you want for just $2.99 per minute.”

At the bottom of a piece designed to resemble a census form, a toll-free number is listed next to the national party’s address.

Yup, they sent out a scam fundraising letter fraudulently looking like an important government document that MUST be filled out and returned and, at the bottom, the phone number to call took you to a phone-sex line.…

“MOMMY!!! Barack won’t let me keep hitting him!”

He was warned, oh yes he was. Having missed Bill Maher’s “New Rule“, the GOPosaurs warned the president that, by God, if he made any recess appointments, well, they would just quit being all bipartisany.

So he did anyway.

15 of ‘em. Average number of days these folks have been waiting to be confirmed: 214.

Now he’ll have to pay the price: no bipartisanship from Congress anymore.

Cry me a damn river.

As the New York Times reports, that was the final fucking straw for Republicans. They have tried and they have tried and they have tried to be bipartisan but the goddam president just wouldn’t let ‘em.…

Rachel Maddow trying to single-handedly change the country’s trajectory

Rachel Maddow has been on FIRE this week. I’ve been a fan of hers since I started listening to her Air America podcasts three years ago. Smart. Funny. Brilliant. Incisive. Genius. Awesome. All of these words describe her well. When she’s on a panel, she’s the smartest person there. When she’s on the radio, she has no peer. When she’s on television, she brings a fresh dose of reality into our living rooms unlike any other pundit or newsperson.

But this week…ah, this week. Rachel Maddow is clearly out to change the way things are in this country right now. Our current trajectory is toward a gridlocked Congress that can accomplish nothing.…

Sarah Palin must be SOOOO pissed

First it was Rahm Emanuel calling liberal activists “fucking retarded” last summer. That earned a sharp rebuke from Sarah Palin this past week when she called for his head on her Facebook page:

I would ask the president to show decency in this process by eliminating one member of that inner circle, Mr. Rahm Emanuel, and not allow Rahm’s continued indecent tactics to cloud efforts. Yes, Rahm is known for his caustic, crude references about those with whom he disagrees, but his recent tirade against participants in a strategy session was such a strong slap in many American faces that our president is doing himself a disservice by seeming to condone Rahm’s recent sick and offensive tactic.…

The greenwashing of coal by exploiting Dr. Seuss

I saw this over at Daily Kos this morning in a piece by Adam Siegel (cross-posted from his most-excellent blog Get Energy Smart! NOW!) and it’s enough to make you spit:

LoraxAg lines up $4.5M for clean coal gas plant.

[LoraxAg] is rounding up $4.5 million in its first institutional funding, with plans to use coal gasification technology to make farm fertilizer from almost worthless coal while creating no pollution.

Let’s just assume for a minute that LoraxAg’s process for converting coal into fertilizer actually “creates no pollution”. That’s not the only issue. Have you ever seen how coal is mined?…

Stupak Op-Ed – Turning on the charm offense, Mr. Reasonable?

In his Op-Ed in the Detroit News today, Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Coathanger) turns on the charm offensive.

And it’s nauseating.

Oh, he starts out reasonable enough:

I adamantly oppose the sweetheart deals provided to certain states in this bill. This reform should be about providing access to affordable health care for all Americans. Where you live should have nothing to do with the quality or cost of your coverage.

Yeah! [Fist jab!!!] In fact, HELL yeah!!!

And then he goes on:

One of the critical accomplishments in the House bill was the repeal of the antitrust exemption for the health insurance industry and the creation of the public health insurance option.…
