Friday night fun: Yoga with a cat

I’m in Ithaca, New York this weekend and tired from a 9-hour drive so instead of my usual Eclectablather, I offer you this amazing video.

She’s really, really good at Sun Salutations. So’s the lady.

Update on Super Student Brianna Amat from Pinckney, Michigan

Back in October, I wrote about Brianna Amat from Pinckney, Michigan. In the span of about 30 minutes, Brianna kicked the game-winning field goal at her school’s homecoming game and then was chosen as the Homecoming Queen.

She’s been feted around the country for what she did and has remained remarkably humble about it the entire time. From my piece on her at Angry Black Lady Chronicles:

Naturally humble, according to Pinckney Community High School Principal Jim Darga, Amat ceased giving media interviews Tuesday after spending almost all of Monday on the phone with media outlets.

“She is not doing any more interviews,” said Darga, who has acted as a “buffer” between the blitzing media and his star kicker.

Punkins! Punkins! Punkins! The coolest Punkins evah!

This was VERY popular last year so I’m reposting for your Halloween viewing pleasure.

Enjoy.
I love Halloween but I’m not much of a punkin carver. However, I love looking at them. Here’s a bunch of the coolest punkins I could find on the web.

Well, except this one. It was taken by my wife:

From her Flickr page:

I’m posting this in honor of my father whose favorite holiday was halloween. Every year until I was 18 we carved pumpkins together. They were all night projects carving crazy detailed pumpkins of things like skeletons and wolves.

This photo was taken in college for my senior project of mixed lighting.…

Coolness break

Okay, THIS is totally cool.

In his 18 years at Pinckney Community High School, Jim Darga, the principal, said, the homecoming queen had always been crowned at halftime of the school’s football game. Never before, though, had she had to be summoned from the team’s locker room.

Brianna Amat, the first girl to make the Pinckney varsity football team, said her teammates had “been so accepting of me.”

And that was just the beginning of Brianna Amat’s big night.

If being named homecoming queen is a lifetime memory for a high school student, so, too, is kicking a winning field goal.

The magic mushroom of Dexter, Part II: The Fairy Ring

Remember my post about the 12-inch wide, 10-inch tall mushroom in my backyard?

It had babies:

This is known as a fairy ring. The original shroom threw out a bunch of spores around itself. It’s long gone but the spores have taken off.

Too bad we’ll be gone for a few days while they are at their peak. Our housesitter will enjoy them. They aren’t edible, though. I’m pretty sure they are Green-spored Lepiota. Here’s the description from the shroom guide:

A drastic sickener, causing one to two or more days of violent purging.

Nom, nom.

It can kill dogs, too, so I just got rid of ‘em.…

White boy got (bad) dance — all over the world

This is a few years old but it’s the first I’ve seen it (H/T Rhoda A.) It’s Matt Harding from Where The Hell Is Matt?. He danced his white butt all over the world. And I do mean all over the world.

Check it out:

Matt is a 34-year-old deadbeat from Connecticut who used to think that all he ever wanted to do in life was make and play videogames. Matt achieved this goal pretty early and enjoyed it for a while, but eventually realized there might be other stuff he was missing out on. In February of 2003, he quit his job in Brisbane, Australia and used the money he’d saved to wander around Asia until it ran out.…

The magic mushroom of Dexter, Michigan

So, last Thursday, I went out into my backyard and found this handsome specimen.

Hey, big fella. Come here often?

The next day, it had gotten even bigger but we left for the weekend around lunchtime and didn’t get to see what would happen. When we got home Sunday evening, we found this:

11½ inches across!

10 inches high!

Day-um… Too bad it’s not edible.
