Ann Arbor Dems host candidates for Michigan Dem Party Chair at the political event of the year (so far)

The Michigan Democratic Party’s center of gravity is in Washtenaw County

Yesterday, the Ann Arbor Dems held their monthly meeting and it featured a powerhouse line-up. In addition to Dr. John Callewaert, a University of Michigan professor who spoke for nearly 30 minutes on hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) in Michigan, the meeting attendees heard from Dean of the U.S. House of Representatives Congressman John Dingell, President of the Michigan State Board of Education John Austin, and local State House Representatives Jeff Irwin and Adam Zemke.

The highlight of the day, however, was appearances by both Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) Chair Mark Brewer and his opponent in the upcoming election for MDP Chair, Lon Johnson. The event was extremely well-run by Ann Arbor Dems chair Mike Henry and in the overflow crowd of around 250 people was nearly every elected official from the Ann Arbor area. It was, without question, the biggest political event in Washtenaw County since the election last November.

Details and lots of photos after the jump.

Dean of the House, Cong. John Dingell chosen as Detroit Free Press “Michigan Green Leader”

I am one of those environmentally conscious liberals who has, over the years, had an unfriendly word or ten to say about Congressman John Dingell. For many years he fought the raising of CAFE mileage standards and that really bothered me. But, since that time, I can honestly say that Congressman Dingell has become someone I not only admire, he has become a friend. So, I was very pleased to learn the that the Detroit Free Press had chosen Congressman Dingell as one of their 2011 Michigan Green Leaders.

John Dingell hasn’t always been environmentalists’ most darling member of Congress, it’s true.…

Some political predictions about the future of Michigan Democrats

For the past 6 months, I’ve been predicting that the east side of Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, which includes Chelsea, Dexter, Scio Township and tiny bit of Ann Arbor, will get lumped in with Congressman John Dingell‘s 15th District during this year’s redistricting process. The Republicans in Michigan have the keys to pretty much every office involved in redistricting. With Michigan losing a Congressional district and this being a post-Census redistricting year, you can be sure they will work their fannies off to kneecap Democrats as much as possible and this is a pretty easy way of doing that.

In the past two elections, the voters in our part of the 7th District were very supportive of former Democratic Congressman Mark Schauer.…

Rob Steele rallies with the whackos

Hey, kids! Wanna have some real fun tomorrow? Get yourself down to the University of Michigan Diag for a rally with Rob Steele, the teabagger GOP candidate running against John Dingell. It starts at 6:30 p.m. and all the cool kids will be there.

Like Wendy Day, Livingston County teabagger organizer and home-schooling Howell School Board member. I’ve written about her before. For example, she led a petition drive to put Michigan opting out of health insurance reform on the November ballot. More famously, when she failed miserably in that effort, she uttered the historic words “We didn’t fail. We just didn’t succeed enough.”

But the best news is that the emcee is none other than WAAM’s Thayrone X.…

The utter hypocrisy of John Dingell’s teabagger opponent

Dr. Rob Steele is running on the Republican Tea Party ticket against the Dean of the House, Congressman John Dingell. His campaign has been positively full of fail but today he reached a new level of fail and hypocrisy (or as I like to call it “GOPocrisy”.)

He is having a “Second Amendment Rally” (Pig Roast, actually) and suggesting that HE is the NRA/pro-RKBA (right to keep and bear arms) candidate.

Why is this fail? Because Congressman Dingell is the NRA-endorsed candidate this year for MI-15.

Oh, looky. Dr. Steele likes to shoot. So does his son. But what about John Dingell?…

“A stuffed Dingell trophy on the wall would send shock waves”

What the hell is it with conservative Republicans and their violent rhetoric? I was searching Twitterland for info on Congressman John Dingell (“The Dean of the House”) when I came across this tweet from his opponent, Rob Steele:

Henry Payne writes “A stuffed Dingell trophy on the wall would send shock waves through Washington.” http://fb.me/AsilJ9Ty

I’ve written about Rob Steele BEFORE. During his latest appearance on Sean Hannity, he brought out his new campaign approach “Vote for me, I’m totally inexperienced”

Congressman Dingell, he’s served honorably. He’s been there since, he’s been in Washington, D.C. since he was seven years old when his dad was elected in 1932 and then he took over for his dad in 1955.…

Purging “bad” Dems is fine AFTER the election. Let’s GOTV! Howard Dean agrees!

Less than 60 days, folks. That’s what we have left to get this done and prevent the GOPosaurs from shutting down Congress for the next two years.

Don’t like Obama? Don’t like the Blue Dogs? Don’t like {fill in the blank}?

Fine. I’m with ya on some of it.

But right now is decidedly NOT the time to stand on the sidelines wringing your hands.

Howard Dean agrees and that’s why he’s appearing in Michigan on Wednesday to energize voters.

We’d all love to see Ben Nelson and his compadres hit the road. Most of us would have loved a strong health insurance reform law and a toothier Wall Street reform bill.…

Dingell foe: “Vote for me, I’m totally inexperienced”

Rob Steele, a wealthy cardiologist, is running against the “Dean of the House”, Congressman John Dingell. His campaign is your typical ultra-right conservative blah-blah: cutspendingcuttaxesdemocratsareresponsibleforthedeficit…etc., etc.

But, I have to say, Rob Steele takes the whole “vote for me, not the ‘career’ politician” thing to a new level. Last night on Sean Hannity’s Great American Panel, he accused John Dingell of having been in Congress since he was 12 and asked people to vote for him because he “went to [his] first county convention two weeks ago.”

God forbid Michigan put its leadership in the hands of wealthy disgruntled citizens with no experience in public policy, running a huge government or of … well … leading.…

Dingell faces the teabaggers: One year later (PHOTOS)

This is a repost of my blog entry from last year where Congressman John Dingell held a pair of town hall meetings one year ago today on the topic of health insurance reform during the Congressional summer break. This event along with my wife’s iconic images became one of the signature events, defining how angry, nearly apoplectic teabaggers set out to shut down discourse, disrupt civic events and completely overwhelm any event where a rational discussion of health insurance reform was attempted.

It many ways the event galvanized health insurance reform advocates around the country. Particularly here in Michigan, those of use promoting health insurance reform or any reform put forth by the Democrats began to turn out to public events in much larger numbers.…

Health Care Bill Thank you party

PHOTOS (lots) – OFA says THANKS to Congressmen Dingell & Schauer

Yesterday morning, Organizing for America (OFA) held an event at the Ann Arbor Community Center to thank Congressmen John Dingell (MI-15) and Mark Schauer (MI-07) for their leadership and votes on the recently-enacted health insurance reform law. The two men represent opposite ends of Congressional spectrum. Congressman Dingell has served longer than any current member of the House of Representatives. Congressman Schauer is still in his first term.

Congressman Mark Schauer and John Dingell

While the event was held to thank them, both legislators emphatically thanked US — their staff, their volunteers, OFA and everyone who kept the faith, made the calls, wrote the letters and talked to their neighbors over the past nine months when the path to health insurance reform was being navigated.…
