ACTION: Michigan GOP imposes its version of morality on the healthcare of women & others, Senate hearing Thursday

It’s hard to swallow you shoving your religion down my throat

The Michigan Republicans are trotting out a “new” bill to further their War on Women and those who don’t share their narrow worldview. I say it’s “new” because it was a bill that died in the last legislative session. They call their bill the “Religious Liberty and Conscience Protection Act” but it’s nothing more than a backdoor way to limit Michigan women’s access to safe and legal abortion services across the state. What makes this legislation so insidious is that it may also restrict all Michigander’s access to things like birth control, vaccines, counseling and even HIV/AIDS treatment.

Details and actions you can take after the jump.

One Romney drops out of the Michigan Senate race, another jumps in

Daughter of the Curse of the Living Romneys

It seems like just a couple of days ago I was writing about how the Romney family just can’t seem to leave Michigan alone. Okay, it WAS just a couple of days ago. At that time, I wrote about how Mitt’s older brother Scott, an attorney few have ever heard of and a man with no almost no experience as an elected official [I have been informed that Mr. Romney once sat on the Michigan State University Board of Trustees from 2000-2008], was pondering running for Senator Carl Levin’s seat when he retires next year. Well, two short days later, he has decided NOT to run after all.

But that doesn’t mean we won’t have a Romney family member to ridicule for running for a national seat with no previous experience whatsoever. Turns out that after Mr. Romney’s decision not to run, he reached into the famous Romney Binder Full of Women™ and now his daughter Ronna Romney McDaniel is “looking at it”.

Senator Carl Levin to retire in 2014 — let the political reshuffling begin

Well this makes things interesting…

U.S. Senator Carl Levin (D – Michigan) announced today that he will not run for re-election in 2014, a move that opens the seat to a newcomer and has Republicans licking their chops at the chance to run for a Senate seat against someone who is not a powerful incumbent.

UPDATED: MI-07 GOP Congressman Tim Walberg lies openly about voting against Violence Against Women Act

Shameless

In what might be one of the most brazen acts of public lying in some time, my “representative” Republican Congressman Tim Walberg went on the air today a lied about his vote against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.

Michigan Republican Tom Casperson joins the Cult of Tea Party Birtherism

Aw geez…

Michigan Republican Tom Casperson opened his mouth and removed all doubt about his status as a tea party fool this week when he answered “don’t know” when asked by radio show host Michael Patrick Shiels if President Obama was born in the USA. Casperson joins the ranks of the 37% of Michigan Republican Party delegates that believe President Obama was not born a US citizen, an astonishing figure given that he has released both the long-form and the short-form versions of his birth certificate. There’s also the fact that a birth announcement appeared in a Hawaiian newspaper the day he was born.

Michigan GOP fights off takeover of party by tea party with help of Governor Rick Snyder

And he accuses US of fighting amongst ourselves? Governor, please.

With all of the attention that was paid these past two weeks between the race for the Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, it was easy to miss the fact that the Michigan Republican Party had a highly-contested race themselves. When the dust had settled at their convention on Saturday, incumbent chair Bobby Schostak had won a narrow 833 to 768 vote over tea party challenger Todd Courser, a favorite of the so-called “Freedom Caucus”. Courser ran on a platform of “liberty and constitutional conservatism”.

The election was so close that Governor Snyder made a surprise appearance at Michigan GOP convention, taking time from the National Governors Association meeting in progress in Washington, D.C. to make an impassioned plea for Schostak’s candidacy. He was even seen pulling people aside to lobby for their votes.

He then accused Democrats of doing the very thing his party was engaged in as he gave his speech. Details after the jump.

All-star Justice Caucus panel at MDP convention talks about campaign finance transparency and reform of our election laws

This should be a non-partisan issue

As I wrote about last week, the Justice Caucus of the Michigan Democratic Party held a discussion panel at the statewide convention on Saturday titled “Citizens United v. FEC – The Invisible ‘Person’ in Michigan Elections”. Organized by former Washtenaw County Democratic Party Chair and well-known Michigan attorney and activist Stu Dowty, the panel discussion was wide-ranging and covered everything from undisclosed donors in our judicial elections to the repeal of the odious Citizens United Supreme Court ruling.

My write-up after the jump.

Michigan Republican Colbeck wants to sell off public spaces for billboards to save corporate tax cuts

Won’t somebody please think of the corporations???

In one of my favorite books of all time, Infinite Jest by the late David Foster Wallace, in an effort to raise money, the Organization of North American Nations (O.N.A.N.) has sold the naming rights to each year to corporations. It’s called “Subsidized Time” and, over the time frame of the book, these are the years:

CHRONOLOGY OF ORGANIZATION OF NORTH AMERICAN NATIONS’ REVENUE ENHANCING SUBSIDIZED TIME™, BY YEAR

  1. Year of the Whopper
  2. Year of the Tucks Medicated Pad
  3. Year of the Trial-Size Dove Bar
  4. Year of the Perdue Wonderchicken
  5. Year of the Whisper-Quiet Maytag Dishmaster
  6. Year of the Yushityu 2007 Mimetic-Resolution-Cartridge-View-Motherboard-Easy-To-Install-Upgrade For Infernatron/InterLace TP Systems For Home, Office Or Mobile (sic)
  7. Year of Dairy Products from the American Heartland
  8. Year of the Depend Adult Undergarment
  9. Year of Glad

It’s an hilarious bit extrapolation of today’s trend of corporate naming of stadiums and sports venues. However, one Michigan Republican seems hellbent on taking us down that slippery slope far faster than you might imagine.

Michigan GOP introduce law to let teachers carry guns in class, tea party group to give free classes

Because with only 1,565,390 students in class, what could POSSIBLY go wrong?

It’s hard to say which the most freakish element of this story is. Is it that some Michigan Republicans want to allow concealed weapons to be carried in our children’s classrooms? Or is it that a tea party PAC is offering free gun classes to get teachers trained so that they can?

Follow me after the jump for all of the right wing insanity.

Michigan GOP continues trying to make a safe and legal medical procedure difficult to get

Another day, another battle in the Republican War on Women

Last December, in a rare veto of Republican legislation by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, bills changing the operating structure of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan were shot down. The reason Governor Snyder gave was that he objected to language in the bill that would require women to purchase a separate abortion coverage rider on their insurance if they wanted that coverage. It would not be part of the basic insurance coverage, unlike, say, Viagra or Cialis for men is. He said that the legislation went “too far in two ways.…
