Sources: Gary Peters to announce candidacy for U.S. Senate this week

You heard it there first

The National Journal is reporting that Congressman Gary Peters will announce his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Carl Levin sometime this week.

That and a Mark Schauer gubernatorial bid is a winning ticket for Michigan Democrats. As I understand it, there are a lot of people pressuring Schauer to run and an early announcement like this one from Peters would be a smart move.

More on the ‘happens all the time’ legislation-stealing that almost nobody knows about

This is not good government

I’ve been writing a lot about how both Republicans and Democrats submit identical legislation, sometimes in the same legislative session, in order to get credit for passing bills and joint resolutions that enjoy widespread bipartisan support (HERE, HERE, and HERE.)

After writing about this, I heard from folks across the country that told me that (a) this isn’t something that’s by any means unique to Michigan, (b) both Democrats and Republicans do it, and (c) “it happens all the time”. From the outside looking in, this looks like nothing more than plagiarism and credit stealing. In some cases, it certainly is, particularly in terms of getting credit for passing good legislation. However, there’s a bit more to the story that’s worth getting out there so that we can discuss the issue with as many of the facts in hand as possible.

It’s all there waiting for you after the jump.

Team Eclectablog to speak to the Lapeer County Dems SATURDAY, APRIL 27th

Reclaiming Abraham Lincoln’s progressive legacy from today’s Republican Party

Next Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., the Lapeer County Democratic Party will have their annual Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser. Anne and I have been invited to speak to the attendees and we’re both really looking forward to it. In addition, Anne has assembled a 30-minute slideshow of some of her best photos, a “greatest hits” album, if you will, that we’ll be showing for at least part of the time.

Details and printable flyer after the jump.

This is why we can’t have nice government

After spending time reading and writing and thinking about the post I put up earlier, “Michigan Republicans stealing bills introduced by Democrats to deny them legislative victories”, I ended up in a funk. I realized that there are actually some areas of common ground between our legislative Democrats and Republicans. They actually DO agree on some things and on some good legislation.

But the politics in this state (and elsewhere, too, I’m sure) have become so toxic that our politicians are fighting to get credit for anything that could be described as “good”. They are so intent on pandering to their constituents and making sure “the other guys” don’t get credit for anything positive that they will steal each others legislation.

UDPATED: Michigan Republicans stealing bills introduced by Democrats to deny them legislative victories

If you can’t win on your own ideas, steal someone else’s

Michigan Republicans have made it patently clear that they have no intention of letting Democrats score any legislative victories whatsoever. In the recent House appropriations legislation debates, for example, Democrats introduced over 70 amendments and every single one of them was shot down by the House Republicans. But even Republicans don’t think that EVERY idea that Democrats have is a bad one. It’s just not something they want the rest of Michigan to believe. So, in order to deny Democrats any legislative victories in the current session, Republicans have begun using an approach that I haven’t heard of before: introducing legislation that is identical to a bill that was introduced by a Democrat and then supporting that one instead.

I’m not kidding. Details after the jump.

PHOTOS & QUOTES: Joe Biden rallies Dems in Detroit, “the figurative & literal engine of the middle class in America”

“[T]he grit and the determination and the confidence, the certainty, the absolute commitment that this country has…is more exemplified by Detroit, Michigan than any other state in the Union.”

All photos by Anne C. Savage, special to Eclectablog. Not for reuse without permission.

Last night’s Jefferson Jackson dinner was a rallying point for Michigan Democrats and every speaker from former Congressman Mark Schauer to Vice President Joe Biden called out Republicans for the harm they are doing to our country, our state, and the middle class and called on Democrats to rise to the challenge of seizing back the reins of power in Michigan.…

BREAKING: Debbie Dingell will NOT run for Senate

A class act by a classy Democrat

Debbie Dingell, whose name has been mentioned in nearly every conversation about who will replace Carl Levin when he leaves his Senate seat in 2014, has announced that she is NOT running. When I spoke with her last week, she made it clear to me then that she had not made a decision at that point. She and her husband Congressman John Dingell are VERY close as those of us in Washtenaw County have the privilege of observing on a regular basis, and a Senate run would have separated them, a prospect that clearly gave Dingell pause.

Today, she has announced that a decision has been made. Her statement is after the jump.

While pundits are busy anointing Gary Peters for Senate, Debbie Dingell puts up strong poll numbers

Let’s take a breath here for a minute, shall we?

You can’t read an article or blog post about the race to fill departing Senator Carl Levin’s seat without hearing how Gary Peters is the leading contender, almost as if the seat is his if he wants it.

While Peters is, without question, a great candidate and certainly someone to watch, Debbie Dingell actually came out 5 points ahead of him in a recent Mitchell poll commissioned by the Detroit News.

In other words, if she were to run, Debbie Dingell would give any other Democrat a very solid run for their money.…

Michigan House Dems announce their budget priorities – Shift $1.5 billion back to middle class families

“Don’t tell me what you value. Show me your budget and I’ll tell you what you value”

This week the Michigan House Democrats revealed their budget priorities for the year. In stark contrast to our far-right ideological Republicans and our corporatist Governor, the Democrats’ priorities reflect concern and care for middle class families, children and seniors. Their budget is a sincere reflection of their values. By the same token, Republicans show what they value as they work to eviscerate public education, demonize teachers and other public employees, raise taxes on the majority of middle class Michiganders and cut taxes for corporations by an astonishing $2 billion.

Get the details after the jump.
