Michigan GOP continues “local control” hypocrisy, advances “super preemption” bill to prevent ALL local gun ordinances

In 1990, Gov. Jim Blanchard signed Public Act 319 of 1990 in to law. The law prohibits “local units of government” from passing laws that restrict “the ownership, registration, purchase, sale, transfer, transportation, or possession of pistols, other firearms, or pneumatic guns, ammunition for pistols or other firearms, or components of pistols or other firearms.” It’s a pretty unambiguous law and has caused some municipalities to repeal local gun ordinances.

However, this was not enough for gun fetishists who want the ability to carry guns wherever and whenever they please, despite the wishes of the citizens in their community. In Ann Arbor, for example, the public school system passed policies that prohibit the carrying of guns on school property whether it’s allowed by state law or not.…

Michigan legislators more afraid of signs than guns in the State Capitol Building

Michigan legislators more afraid of signs than guns in the State Capitol Building

I have known for quite awhile that you can’t bring a sign into the State Capitol Building. You can’t miss the signs telling you to leave your signs behind when you enter the august edifice. What I did NOT know until recently is that bringing a gun into that same building is A-OK. Thankfully, sanity is prevailing, at least on the side of Democrats who have introduced legislation to prohibit firearms in the Capitol and allowing people to express their First Amendment rights by bringing in a sign

As it stands today you can openly carry a firearm, but not a sign, into the state capitol.…

Michigan Republicans introduce bill to end requirement for concealed pistol licenses, say it will INCREASE training

A group of Michigan Republicans is sick and tired of having to go through training on how to handle a weapon and all that damned paperwork that it takes to get a concealed pistol license. One of the sponsors, Triston Cole, calls the permitting process “government overreach”.

That’s why he signed on to co-sponsor House Bill 5303. It changes the current law by striking out the language requiring a concealed pistol license:

(2) This act or a rule promulgated or order issued by the department or the commission under this act shall not be construed to prohibit an individual from transporting a pistol or carrying a loaded pistol, whether concealed or not.…

Another Michigan concealed pistol license holder uses gun illegally

Another Michigan concealed pistol license holder uses gun illegally

In the past week and half, Michigan gun owners have made the news for improper use of their handguns several times. First, concealed pistol license holder Tatiana Duva-Rodriguez saw a guy running out of the Auburn Hills Home Depot and load stuff in his vehicle. When a security guard came running after him. Duva-Rodriguez took the law into her own hands by pulling out her handgun and firing multiple shots at his vehicle. Police confirmed that she herself was never threatened.

She’s now being charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, a misdemeanor that could result in a maximum 90 days in jail and a possible fine of up to $500.…

Michigan Senate passes “Guns Everywhere” bills out of committee

Michigan Senate passes “Guns Everywhere” bills out of committee

Back in the lame duck session of 2012, Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed a bill that would have allowed concealed weapons to be carried just about everywhere. Schools, day care centers, sports arenas, bars, places of worship, hospitals, dorms and casinos. All of these so-called gun-free zones would no longer be gun-free.

He made the right decision.

However, yesterday the Senate Judiciary Committee passed similar legislation, Senate Bills 442 and 561 – referred to by some as “Guns Everywhere” bills – on a 4-1 party line vote. The bills are touted as a “fix” to our weird situation where it’s illegal to carry a concealed weapon but okay to openly display a weapon in gun-free zones like schools, college dorms, sports stadiums and other public venues, places one advocate for looser gun control has called “mass murder empowerment zones.…

Vigilante who shot at alleged Home Depot shoplifter charged with misdemeanor

The woman who took the law into her own hands and fired multiple rounds at an alleged shoplifter in the Auburn Hills Home Depot has been identified as Tatiana Duva-Rodriguez, a 46-year old woman from Clarkston. She has been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, a misdemeanor that could result in a maximum 90 days in jail and a possible fine of up to $500 for the woman.

Local law enforcement agents were not pleased with her “assistance”.

“The investigation concerned allegations that Duva-Rodriguez shot at the tires of a passing truck in the misguided attempt to disable the vehicle to stop two reported shoplifters,” a joint statement,” [Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica R.] Cooper said in a prepared statement.…

UPDATED: Michigan, where shoplifting is a crime punishable by death (if an armed bystander decides it is)

UPDATED: Michigan, where shoplifting is a crime punishable by death (if an armed bystander decides it is)

A woman in Michigan this week decided that shoplifting was a crime punishable by death. She was in the parking lot of a busy Home Depot in Auburn Hills when she saw a security guard chasing someone out of the store. The fleeing person got into a vehicle and drove away. That’s when the woman took matters into her own hands:

[W]hen the SUV began to pull away, a 48-year-old woman suddenly began firing shots at the fleeing vehicle. The vehicle escaped – but possibly has a flat tire, McDonnell said.

The woman who fired the shots has a license to carry a firearm and is cooperating with police.

Courser & Gamrat sued by former staffers, Courser thinks we need MORE guns on college campuses

Much as most of us wish that the Courser/Gamrat saga would just end, there is no sign of that happening. Late last week, former Courser & Gamrat staffers Ben Graham and Keith Allard filed a lawsuit against the two claiming they were fired in violation of the Michigan Whisleblowers’ Protection Act:

Ex-staffers have sued former state Reps. Todd Courser and Cindy Gamrat under the Michigan Whisleblowers’ Protection Act, alleging they were fired “solely in retaliation” for telling House management about the lawmakers’ extra-marital affair, cover-up and other behavior.

An attorney for Keith Allard and Ben Graham filed the complaint Friday in Ingham County Circuit Court, seeking compensation for “economic and non-economic” damages, fees, interest and other relief.

In Michigan, we have to let gun lovers tote guns in schools but the national NRA convention is a gun-free zone

In Michigan, we have to let gun lovers tote guns in schools but the national NRA convention is a gun-free zone

Here in Michigan, we have a quirky bunch of messed up gun laws that allow people with concealed pistol licenses carry guns in schools. Because of the loophole, they can only do so if they open carry where everyone can see it.

For me, it’s tantamount to having “I’m stoopid” tattooed across your forehead and anyone who open carries in schools does so knowing full well they are going to create a disturbance. They know this. It’s intentional on their part. Because anyone with two brain cells to smack together knows that if you see someone with a gun in a school, chances are they are a nut who is going to take some people out.…

UPDATED – VIDEO: White Michigan man on “open carry walk” prompts school lockdown, taunts cops, and lives

A man who bravely goes by the name of Nunya Beeswax online went for an “open carry walk” in southeastern Michigan and prompted a lockdown of the Lamphere High School in Madison Heights. Police are aware of the guy who is known for doing provocative things to get attention. In this instance he “started in Royal Oak, and he walked quite a ways to Madison Heights and then walked back”. That’s not all he did. He filmed the entire encounter with police officers and attempted to enter the school a municipal building.

Let’s role tape (NOTE: this is a longer version than the one I originally posted.…

Gov. Rick Snyder does the right thing twice in one day using his veto pen

Gov. Rick Snyder does the right thing twice in one day using his veto pen

Earlier this month I wrote about a truly horrible piece of legislation passed by Michigan Republicans that would have compelled county clerks to issue concealed weapons permits to stalkers & spouse abusers. Today, Gov. Rick Snyder used his veto pen to send it to the rubbish bin of history where it belongs:

Gov. Rick Snyder today vetoed a controvhttp://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/2013-2014/billanalysis/House/pdf/2013-HLA-0789-6F92BDA1.pdfersial bill that pitted gun rights groups against advocates for victims of domestic violence.

Snyder’s veto of Senate Bill 789 was one of several significant bill signings and vetoes he announced today, with time running out for him to either sign or veto many of the bills passed during the lame-duck legislative session in December.
