Statewide Dem candidates forum in Ypsilanti yesterday

Yesterday, February 6, three Democratic candidates for statewide office appeared on a panel to discuss their candidacy and to answer questions from the audience. The event was sponsored by People of Diversity United for Equality (PODUE) and was held at the Brown Chapel AME in Ypsilanti. In attendance were Alma Wheeler-Smith — candidate for governor, Jocelyn Benson — candidate for Secretary of State, and Richard Bernstein — candidate for Attorney General. The forum was moderated by Rep. Rebekah Warren — with opening and closing remarks by House Speaker Pro Tempore Pam Byrnes, both candidates for State Senate.

The Luntz pwnage and Democrats’ next steps

After my diary about the epic Frank Luntz fail spent most of the day at the top of the Rec List yesterday, I emailed Countdown with Keith to bring it to their attention. It seemed to fit in nicely with their segment about Luntz from the day before.

Sure enough, they picked it up and it was the subject of Keith’s only “Short Comment” last night. (Video HERE.)

It was a fun day. My blog got tons of hits and I didn’t realize that a Kos Tip Jar could fit that many tips. But now it’s time to move forward.…

John Conyers co-files Constitutional amendment to reverse SCOTUS ruling

On the heels of his co-sponsorship of one of Rep. Alan Grayson’s “Save Our Democracy” bills, John Conyers, Jr. has signed on to co-file an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to reverse the horrendous Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) decision commonly known as the Citizens United decision.

Way to go, Representative Conyers!

Here’s the amendment language:

111TH CONGRESS
2D SESSION

H. J. RES. ___
Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States permitting Congress and the States to regulate the expenditure of funds by corporations engaging in political speech.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Ms. EDWARDS of Maryland (for herself and Mr.

Andrew Sullivan: Obama ain’t done yet

While I don’t agree with him on everything, I appreciate Andrew Sullivan and his outsider’s (British) perspective on American politics. His essay in the Sunday Times this past weekend, titled “Listen up, the president is not for turning” is no exception. And it has some common sense observations that all of us, conservatives and liberals alike, would do well to digest.

Money quote (for me):

…if you look at the state of American politics, you see Democrats refusing to restrain some of their worst spendthrift instincts and unable to pass an important bill even with the biggest majorities in both houses in years.

In retrospect, Pres.Obama really made a strategic error

Anyone who has read my blog in the past year knows I’m one of those who is out front with in support of the president and his administration. This blog entry doesn’t change that. But I am going to acknowledge this: when it comes to messaging, the president has left it to Congressional Democrats and they don’t know what the hell they are doing. And we are seriously paying the price for that on nearly every issue we’re fighting for.

Barack Obama knows messaging. That much was clear from his campaign and we got another tasty glimpse of it yesterday when he went into the lions’ den of the Republican party and then tweaked their short hairs on national television.…

Washtenaw Dems chair Stu Dowty smacks down Heritage News

Okay, not the entire newspaper. But Heritage Newspapers employee Terry Jacoby anyway.

Stu Dowty is the chair of the Washtenaw County Democratic Party. Since his election to that position in 2009, he has done a terrific job of leading the Dems. In answering a series of questionnaire questions sent to him by Mr. Jacoby, Stu demonstrates his extensive knowledge of both the “lay of the land” for Democrats in Washtenaw County as well as the facts and figures of health care and the position our country was in a year ago vs. today.

Most of the questions are just what you would expect from a newspaper editor or journalist.…

Grayson gets first co-sponsor: Rep. John Conyers (D-MI)

Cross-posted at Daily Kos and Blogging For Michigan.

This one seems to have slipped a bit under the radar (though I did mention it briefly in blog entry yesterday.

In response to the odious decision by the U.S. Supreme Court this week, Rep. Alan Grayson (FL-08) has put together a package of bills he calls the “Save Our Democracy” Reform Package (H.R. 4431-4435).

On Friday, Rep. John Conyers (MI-14) from my fine state of Michigan signed on as the first co-sponsor of the Ending Corporate Collusion Act (H.R. 4433).

Now we’re getting somewhere.

From Rep. Grayson’s website:

Congressman Alan Grayson has introduced legislation to prevent a corporate takeover of government in America.…

MI-07 Rep. Schauer supports reconciliation, decries SCOTUS

Cross-posted at Daily Kos, Blogging for Michigan, and Michigan Liberal.

Last night, MI-07 Representative Mark Schauer spoke to the 2010 annual membership meeting of the Western Washtenaw Dems. During his conversation, he came out firmly in favor of a budget reconciliation path to passing health insurance reform legislation and was outspoken about the atrocious decision by the Supreme Court of the United States to allow nearly unlimited corporate funding of political campaigns.

We need to push a bill, maybe taking the Senate bill and modifying it, and put into it all the components that can be passed under reconciliation.

Liberals give Obama a test no mortal could pass

I took a computer science class in college, a FORTRAN programming class. Each program I wrote was worth 8 points. However, there were at least 40 different things I could do to lose points. Mess up 8 of those those 40 things and get a zero.

That’s unfair.

And it’s exactly what liberals are doing to our president and his administration right now.

My mother-in-law likes to say “The Republican Party is run by a CEO, the Democratic Party is run by committee.” And it’s true. Republicans have a CEO (those who write their talking points and decide their positions) and then, almost without fail their members do what the CEO says as a single voice.…
