POLL: Mark Schauer now tied with Rick Snyder, Terri Lynn Land sinking into obscurity

by

Public Policy Polling’s latest Michigan poll has very good news for Democrats. Let’s start out with the very best news: after trailing in all previous polling, Mark Schauer is now in a 40-40 dead heat with incumbent Republican Governor Rick Snyder. What’s more, Snyder’s numbers are down four points from December and he has a negative job approval of 54% vs. only 37% who think he’s doing a good job.

Mark Schauer is still introducing himself to the voters in Michigan and every poll shows him doing better and better. Rick Snyder, on the other hand, who virtually every Michigander knows, appears to be cratering.

Terri Lynn Land, on the other hand, is doing even worse than Gov. Snyder. She’s trailing Gary Peters by points (41-45%) and has an incredibly high unfavorability rating of 42%. Only 32% like her. This is a “really” big turnaround given that she was up over Peters by two points in December of 2013.

Overall, Democrats are looked on favorably by voters, particularly compared to Republicans. They have an even favorable/unfavorable rating of 39% each. Republicans, by comparison, are reviled by most Michiganders. Only 24% give them favorable marks while a whopping 56% have an unfavorable opinion.

PPP puts it this way:

The Republicans in the legislature are incredibly unpopular, with a 24/56 favorability rating. The Democrats at least manage to break even at 39%. Democrats lead the generic legislative ballot at this point 48/34- 92% of Democrats are committed to voting for their party, while just 79% of Republicans say they’re going to vote for theirs.

Between the War on Workers and the War on Women plus their inability to do anything helpful with regard to road repair or education, the chickens are coming home to roost for Michigan Republicans.
