Corporatism, Michigan Republicans, Rick Snyder — November 22, 2013 at 11:20 am

Woo hoo! Michigan’s unemployment rate didn’t go up! Of course, it didn’t go down either…

It’s the time of year to be thankful

After going up for three straight months in a row, June through August, we now have some good news: Michigan’s unemployment rate has flat-lined at 9.0%:

It’s an interesting chart. Michigan Republicans and Governor Snyder ensured us that making Michigan an anti-worker right to work (for less) state was going to create a stampede of new companies and a surge in job growth. But, looking at the chart, just five months after they passed their anti-worker law, the downward trend that was in full swing turned around and started going up.

It’s good to see it stabilizing but the reality is that it’s only down 0.1% since a year ago and we’re still well above the national average of 7.3% and rank 49th nationally. It’s clear that Republicans don’t have a clue about creating good paying jobs. Their “race to the bottom” mentality of creating a corporate-friendly environment where wages are as low as possible isn’t having the intended effect of bringing in new employers but it will the intended effect of lowering workers’ wages which is harmful to our economy overall.

There are times when saying “I told you so” just isn’t all that satisfying. This is one of them.
