Stay classy, professor

A top economic adviser for Mitt Romney, a Harvard professor named Greg Mankiw posted a “joke” on his blog yesterday that really makes you question the guy’s judgement. Here’s a screen shot:

Budget Cuts

Next Month, the Immigration Department will start deporting seniors (instead of illegals) in order to lower Social Security and Medicare costs. Older people are easier to catch and less likely to remember how to get back home.

Oh, hardy har har har, eh? Those senile old people, they are soo-ooo funny! And, hey, that’s a sure fire way to win over the senior and Hispanic voters in this country. You know, the ones Mitt thinks should “self-deport”.

As Glenn Thrush at Politico points out, it’s bad enough that this Romney economic adviser, an Ivy League professor who ought to know better, would post something so crass as this in the middle of an election. But to do it on the very day that Paul Ryan released the GOP’s “new” budget that adds a tremendous financial burden on our nation’s seniors to help pay for deficit reduction, a tax break for the super-wealthy and continuing tax breaks for Big Oil companies shows a real lack of judgement and class.

Pathetic.
