The Republican “Path to Poverty”

by

Paul Ryan calls his new budget cause the “Path to Prosperity”. The new head of the Democratic National Committee, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (woo HOO!!!) calls it, appropriately, the “Path to Poverty”.

Mr. Chairman, I rise today in support of amendment number 4 which stops reckless and shameful cuts to senior and nursing homes. As a member of Congress representing a large number of seniors in south Florida, I can tell you that this budget would be devastating for seniors and older Americans.

This Republican Path to Poverty passes like a tornado through America’s nursing homes, where millions of America’s seniors receive long-term and end of life care. 60% of Americans in nursing homes are on Medicaid so cuts to Medicaid would have a dramatically negative effect on seniors.

The federal government made a commitment to each and every one of us that, when we get older, we would not need to live in poverty or force our children into poverty to care for us. For decades we’ve looked to Medicare and Medicaid with the expectation that the federal government would honor its commitment.

Now, with this budget plan, Republicans are trying to back out of this commitment to our seniors. We cannot go back on our promise to the greatest generation. The Republican Path to Poverty in this budget does just that.

When was the last time you heard Tim Kaine be that eloquent and that on message? Never? Yup, never. Kaine is probably the most uninspiring leader of the DNC in my lifetime.

We should have hired this awesome woman a LONG time ago. Thank Goddess we’ve done it now.

I’m just sayin’…
