Arizona sues Big Government for not being Big Government

by

Ah, this is rich. Jan Brewer, the Arizona governor who cried bloody murder when the federal government intruded on her state’s right to pass the “Papers, Please” law, is suing the federal government for failing to protect Arizonians from an “invasion” of undocumented immigrants. In other words, she wants the federal government to stay out of her state’s business except when she doesn’t.

Gov. Jan Brewer sued the federal government Thursday for failing to control Arizona’s border with Mexico and enforce immigration laws, and for sticking the state with huge costs associated with jailing illegal immigrants who commit crimes.

The lawsuit claims the federal government has failed to protect Arizona from an “invasion” of illegal immigrants. It seeks increased reimbursements and extra safeguards, such as additional border fences.

Brewer’s court filing serves as a countersuit in the federal government’s legal challenge to Arizona’s new enforcement immigration law. The U.S. Justice Department is seeking to invalidate the law.

“Because the federal government has failed to protect the citizens of Arizona, I am left with no other choice,” Brewer said as sign-carrying protesters yelled chants at her and at other champions of the immigration law.

She’s all for Big Government coming in to rescue her state from this “invasion” but she wants Big Government to butt out the rest of the time:

From new laws targeting illegal immigrants to lawsuits over federal health-care reform, Arizona is seeking myriad opportunities to take back power from a federal government that it believes has overstepped its authority.

Proponents, including Gov. Jan Brewer and many GOP lawmakers, call their effort renewed federalism and cheer the push to reassert states’ rights.

“Arizona is a leader in the movement, but now, we are seeing several states stepping up,” said Brewer, who has made challenging the federal government one of her administration’s top priorities. “We need to be able to make the decisions that control the destiny of our populations. And if the government would step back and give us the opportunity, we would do a great job.”

“Leave me alone! Save me! Leave me alone! Save me!”

Man, I’m getting whiplash.

Adding…Beyond the utter GOPocrisy of this lawsuit, illegal immigration has actually gone down in the USA since President Obama took office. Also, as pointed out in the Washington Post article:

[A] spokesman for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which is in charge of policing the country’s borders, called Brewer’s lawsuit a meritless action and said Border Patrol staffing is higher than ever.

This, of course, makes you wonder why Arizona didn’t sue the federal government when the Bush administration was in charge and things were much worse. Probably because, at that time, they had a sane governor, Janet Napolitano.

I’m just sayin’…
